Confira as Palestras do Latincoat & Adhesives 2010 - Parte 4
Continua a divulgação da série de palestras que serão apresentadas no Latincoat & Adhesives 2010.
Ao longo do mês de agosto serão divulgados os resumos de todas as palestras tanto do segmento de tintas quanto de adesivos.

Coatex - New Highly Performing Associative Acrylic Thickeners For Water-Borne Architectural Coatings
New highly performing associative acrylic thickeners supplements the already eco-friendly existing associative acrylic thickeners range of Coatex and offers to the formulator improved rheological solutions suitable for low VOC to solvent free formulations.
The new acrylic thickeners provide exceptional benefits thanks to unique rheology and viscoelasticity characteristics imparting in particular better flow and levelling, which is generally difficult to obtain from acrylic thickeners.
A special feature is the increased medium shear response compared to other associative acrylics contributing to a better in can appearance, a better workability and a better spatter and film build control. The better thickening efficiency is considered as a major asset allowing to reduce the dosage by half in given cases.
The new cost saving rheology modifiers can then be considered as a realistic alternative to cellulosics thanks to the mentioned enhanced coating properties.
The novel technology also provides outstanding performance such as a better rheology consistency regarding the change of binder type and ratio in formulations. Rheological adjustment is then facilitated and better consistency is obtained in terms of thickening efficiency thus contributing for a better rationalization of thickeners.
The latest generation of acrylic thickeners can also ensure improved behaviour after tinting. Very good color acceptance upon tinting is generally already provided with the existing associative acrylic thickener. Nevertheless, a lack of stability after color addition may occur thus leading to in can pigment phase separation or flooding issues often revealed by rub out test.
The use of universal colorant in tinting paints can indeed lead to important viscosities drop, particularly when the paint is tinted to a deep tone. Colorants contain high levels of surfactants which can compete with the hydrophobe of the associative thickeners for adsorption sites on the hydrophobe binder particles. In given cases, the interaction between the associative rheology modifiers and the binder can be disrupted resulting in a weaker thickening network. The viscosity can be dramatically reduced affecting the application properties: poor sag resistance, hiding and brush load.
Viscosity drop upon tinting as well as color float can be more easily addressed with the new associative acrylic rheology modifiers thanks to a specific hydrophobe of the associative thickener contributing to a stronger thickening network resulting in a better stabilization of the pigment.
The new series offer decisive advantages and thus constitute excellent tools intended for use in very high quality formulation.
