Titanium Dioxide - The right performance
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most important
white pigments for a broad range of applications, inclu-
ding decorative paints, protective coatings and printing
inks, as well as plastic, rubber, paper, foods, textiles and
pharmaceuticals. The most important property of any
white pigment is the ability to become opaque and bri-
ghtening the medium on which it is dispersed.
The consumption of titanium dioxide in Brazil has been
increasing constantly each year. From a long-term
perspective, the titanium dioxide consumption in Brazil
increases by one to two percentage points more than
the GDP. However, if you take a particular year, you may
find either faster or slower growth in TiO2 sales than
that in the GDP due to inventory adjustments. As for
the market in 2008, the apparent consumption gained
approximately 14 percent over 2007. Part of that growth
is attributable to the large amounts that were imported
in 2007 which due to shipping delays in the fourth quar-
ter wound up being accounted for against the apparent
demand for the first quarter of 2008 and deducted from
the aforementioned quarter of 2007, thereby influencing
the relevant computation bases. In Brazil, consumption
has been increasing consistently each year. From 2005
until 2008, the mean annual growth has been in excess
of 7 percent, which represents more than twice the
world average of approximately 3 percent. The con-
sumption growth for 2008 is estimated at 5 percent, re-
aching 155,000 tons notwithstanding the fall in demand
during the last quarter.
RadTech - UV cure and safety
By definition, the term “ultraviolet radiation” is used to
describe the instant polymerization of a high-solids che-
mical system characterized by the use of UV-reactive raw
materials that drastically reduce VOC (Volatile Organic
Compound) emissions. For this reason, the radiation cure
technology is recognized as environmentally correct, whi-
le providing a number of benefits in terms of quality and
productivity. In processes involving ultraviolet cure, one
must bear in mind two essential components: chemistry
and equipment.
quantiQ, formerly known as Ipiranga Química
Ipiranga Química, Brazil’s leading chemical and petro-
chemical distributor to the industry and a company con-
trolled by Braskem, has now a new identity and brand
name. Now it is called quantiQ, a word derived from the
Latin term “quantum”, which reportedly means “how
much”, “so much,” “as much as possible.” The brand was
created by GAD Branding.
According to CEO Fernando Rafael Abrantes, this is also
an opportunity for the company to refresh itself in times
of crisis. quantiQ saw its revenues increase by 32 per-
cent over the past two years. “It’s a coincidence in time,
but to some extent it turns out to be an opportunity. We
are taking a bold, creative and innovative approach in
our handling today’s economic instability.”
“Braskem gives us carte blanche to run the company’s
business. We have great business synergies which trans-
late to the possibility of a strategic alignment,” says
Fernando Abrantes.
The change taking place is positive for the company’s re-
lationship with the market, customers and the quantiQ
team. “We want to always evolve in terms of our delivery
capacity, the quality and diversity of our products, and
our knowledge of the marketplace.”
With gross revenues of R$ 803 million in 2008, which
represents a 19.3-percent increase, the company has
bold goals for this year. “We intent to grow 19 percent
over the previous year on the back of specific strategies
for our target market segments and the consolidation
of our Lifescience division, which is organized into the
following business units: Scents and Fragrance; Cos-
metics; Human and Animal Nutrition Additives; and
Pharmaceutical,” says the CEO.
The new brand is also considered to encourage the com-
pany to achieve its goals. Plans for 2009 include expan-
ding the markets served, improving the team’s producti-
vity, and focusing on relationships with customers.
Packaging - A solution like none before in Brazil
Schütz Vasitex, a company created to provide the best
industrial packaging solutions for the Brazilian market,
is the result of an alliances that combines the produc-
tion capabilities and services of Germany-based Schütz
with the local expertise and experience of Vasitex, a
company based in Brazil engaged in the business of
reconditioning and recycling plastic IBCs, drums and
bulk containers. Vasitex is a pioneer in the business of
recycling industrial packaging materials for the chemi-
cal, agrochemical and petrochemical industries.
The result of the alliance between the two companies,
Schütz Vasitex now has another production plant for
packaging materials. The previously existing plant will
be exclusively focused on services. The new plant will
start up in March. The innovation is the production of
a packaging for the first time in the continent and the
Southern Hemisphere. It’s the multilayered anti-static
polyethylene technology, which until then was avai-
lable only in the United States, the UK and Germany,
and is now brought to Brazil by Schütz Vasitex. The
company will manufacture intermediate bulk contai-
ners (IBCs) with three and six functional layers using a
unique, exclusive technology, forming a safe barrier to
oils, gases, fats and solvents. The total investment in
Schütz Vasitex’s new plant was R$ 35 million, inclu-
ding machines, equipment, construction and industrial
facilities. The new plant has a built-up area of 102,200
sq. meters, 86,100 sq. meters of which taken up by
production, and will have a capacity of 25,000 units
per month.
