PAINT & PINTURA
The big day has come!
Clipping
Y
ou cannot talk about the market without mentioning the feared economic crisis. Fortunately, ho-
wever, there are good news, or better still, surprising news. The 13th Paint & Pintura Awards have
also given a more than welcome boost to the paint and coatings market.
To begin with, this year we obtained the largest number of answers to the survey that precedes the
presentation of the awards, reaching a total of 144 participants, 88 of which being paint companies.
This means that practically one third of the paint market has contributed to the results, and the best
thing is that those companies account for more than 80 percent of the volume of paints produced in Brazil.
Another reason for celebration was the reception of the awards. Right in the eye of the economic hurricane,
the companies involved continued to bet on the “Oscar” of the paint industry. The truth is everybody was che-
erful and excited to know who are the best among both suppliers to the paint industry and paint manufactu-
rers themselves, including personalities, the Advertisement of the Year, and the Master Company.
On behalf of the entire team of Ávila-Agnelo Editora, we thank those companies who believe in our work and
are confident that it is done with great seriousness and transparency. All of the information on the survey
and winners can be reviewed and celebrated in this issue of our magazine. Check it out!
For the latest developments and market expectations, you readers can also check the reports on polyurethane
resins, emulsions and filter elements and filtration equipment, which, despite the rather critical situation,
provide optimistic forecasts for the end of the year.
In addition to my congratulations to all winners of the 13th Paint & Pintura Awards, I’d also like to congratu-
late all of the companies who were finalists and were mentioned during the entire survey.
Enjoy!

Polyurethane Resins - Global reality
Like all segments of Brazil’s chemical industry, polyu-
rethane resins for paints have also been impacted by
the economic crisis. A surveyed conducted by polyu-
rethane resin manufacturers has shown that a major
concern right now is about the duration and inten-
sity of this global crisis, which will determine the
path that the industry will follow around the world.
All of the changes that are taking place have a direct
influence on consumption, and one of today’s biggest
challenges is understanding the main results and
effects of this feared crisis
One of the biggest problems that those surveyed are
detecting in the market has to do with confidence.
However, each company should look for its own way
out of the crisis, which should start from an eva-
luation of its customers’ concerns and difficulties,
aiming at helping them solve problems.
Emulsions - Optimism in 2009
The consumption of emulsions by the paint industry
has also fallen since the last quarter of 2008, and
the situation is still rather delicate. According to our
interviews with suppliers of emulsions to the paint
and coatings industry, the world economic crisis
has had several impacts on the market, such the
reduction and high cost of inventories, plummeting
exports, credit difficulties, highly volatile prices for
raw materials, shortage of products and defaults,
among others.
But there is nothing to prevent a turnaround in the
demand for emulsions. This is because there are very
optimistic prospects for the second half of 2009,
primarily due to some of the measures that the go-
vernment has taken, such as cutting certain taxes in
the construction and automotive industry, restoring
credit for the industry and others.
