sion in the market by creating and introducing the
innovations that will shape the future of the paint
market.
Over the 21 years of his career at Rohm and Raas,
Fernandes has held several positions, including ma-
nager of operations and global sales in 1998, at the
Philadelphia office (US). With a degree in business
management from Universidade São Marcos and an
MBA degree in International Business Management
from Temple University, Philadelphia, Fernandes will
also be in charge, as director, of Dow Coating Mate-
rials’ Southern Cone Business Unit.
Having unresolved strategy issues to deal with over
the next two months —such as determining the
distribution model to be pursued by the new corpo-
ration—, Fernandes shows optimism about Brazil,
which he considers to be one of the great targets of
mid-term and long-term international investments.
Concerning the paint market specifically, the execu-
tive reveals that not only will Dow Coating Materials
help customers grow, it will be incisive about expan-
ding the consumption of paints. “Before increasing
our market share, it is more important to do what it
takes so that the market can expand,” ponders Mr.
Fernandes.

Sustainability and Radiation Curing: Developing
the paint of the future
The adverse effects of the way in which we interact
with our plant and other people have sparked inten-
sive discussions about sustainability in all segments
of society. The consequences are evident of years of
activities that are harmful to the environment and
humans, from both an environmental and human
relations standpoint. We seek to carry on with the
economic development required for ensuring better
living conditions, according to new, sustainable acti-
vity standards for industries, governmental agencies,
service providers and society as a whole.
13th Paint & Pintura Survey
Record number of answerers elect the best in
the paint market
The Paint & Pintura Survey presents the companies
and professionals whose talent and strategic busi-
ness vision have gained the preference of Brazilian
paint manufacturers. It also presents the best paint
manufacturers in the nation, as well as the Master
Company, which is the one scoring the most points in
the most categories.
While many associate the number 13 with bad luck,
for us, at Paint & Pintura, the thirteenth edition
of the most anticipated award in the paint market
couldn’t have sent more positive signs. This year we
are celebrating the most positive response to the
Paint & Pintura Survey, which was conducted from
January 16 until April 03. This year’s edition of the
survey had 144 answerers, 88 of whom being paint
companies, which represent one third of the Brazilian
market. What is more, the paint companies partici-
pating in the 13th Paint & Pintura survey account for
more than 80 percent of the entire volume of paints
produced in Brazil.
In 2009, the 13th edition of the Paint & Pintura
Suppliers Survey shows what companies are the
paint industry’s favorite suppliers in 37 categories,
including the newly created Additives for Powder
Coatings and Paint Application Equipment. Also for
this edition, the Metallic and Pearlescent Pigments
category has been split into one for metallic and one
for pearlescent pigments.
The survey also points to personalities in nine cate-
gories, the best paint companies in seven segments,
as well as the Advertisement of the Year and the
Master Company, which is the one having scored the
most points in the largest number of categories, a
feat that was performed by Clariant again this year.
Clariant also stood up among the suppliers to the paint
industry, winning three trophies, as best supplier of
Pigment Dispersions, Emulsions and Organic Chemicals,
and so did BASF, as Master Company and best supplier
of Raw Materials for Resins and Emulsions, and Evonik,
for its Silicas and Tinting Systems – Colorants.
Among paint manufacturers, applause for Sherwin-
Williams, who won two awards, as Best Manufactu-
rer of Liquid Industrial Coatings and Best Manufac-
turer of Flooring Paints.
As to the professionals, the highlight was the AkzoNo-
bel team, who won the most trophies for this edition
of the Paint & Pintura Award through AkzoNobel
itself, in the Quality Management and Production &
Engineering categories, Tintas Coral (part of the Akzo-
Nobel group), in the Logistics and Safety & Environ-
ment categories, and ICI Packaging Coatings (also part
of the Dutch group), in the Marketing category.
