Technical Article –
Understanding the
alcoholysis and esterification
reaction mechanisms in the
preparation of alkyd resins
The alcoholysis and esterification
reactions are highly important
stages of the process whereby
alkyd resins are produced. For this
reason, the full version of this ar-
ticle, available in Portuguese only,
seeks to emphasize these reactions
for a better understanding.
On the other hand, alkyd resins
continue to be key polymers in
the formulation of nitro systems
in general, air- and/or oven-
drying synthetic enamels and
primers for general industrial
applications, silk-screen and
flexo printing inks, etc.
8th Seminar on
Environmental and Safety
Matters in the Paint Industry
– Sustainable practices and
concepts thrive in the paint
industry
The 8th edition of the Seminar
on Environmental and Safety
Matters in the Paint Industry,
held by Abrafati on June 25 at
the Senai Mario Amato trade
school, located in São Bernardo
do Campo, São Paulo, provided
an excellent opportunity for the
paint industry to discuss some
essential themes, such as risk
management, sustainability,
environmental responsibility and
quality of life.
Attended by 50 managers, te-
chnicians and researchers, the
main goal of the seminar was
to discuss trends, innovation,
problems and solutions concer-
ning the environment, health
and occupational safety, helping
professionals assess and outline
strategies from a fresh, far-ran-
ging view point.
In times of crisis, keeping up
investments while going by the
principles of quality, sustaina-
bility and social responsibility is
always a challenge. However, the
themes covered and initiatives
presented at the seminar show
that the paint industry keeps
doing its share on the occupatio-
nal health, occupational safety
and environmental fronts. “We’ve
made great progress in environ-
ment, safety and occupational
health. We’ve laid solid founda-
tions, but there’s still a long way
to go,” says Dilson Ferreira, chief
executive officer at Abrafati. “The
missions ahead of us include, for
example, carrying on with our
work on the lead legislations
towards eliminating from the
market any paints containing
that metal. Another example is
the reduction of VOC (Volatile
Organic Compound) emissions, a
mission that required coopera-
tion from technicians and paint
suppliers and had the entire su-
pply chain engaged in changing
raw materials and processes back
to back, until application. Exten-
ding the practices and concepts
of the Coatings Care program to
other companies in an additional
challenge,” he adds.
