PAINT & PINTURA
from the four corners of the earth shared with the
audience the latest studies focusing on everything
involved in the paint lifecycle, from raw materials
to the proper disposal of coated materials after
used, including some of today’s major themes,
such as efficiency in manufacturing, reduction of
VOC contents, use of nano-materials, raw mate-
rials from renewable sources, and many others.
The seminar on radiation curing held in conjunc-
tion with RadTech South Ameri-
ca and the solvents symposium
held together with Sindsolv
were also two major innova-
tions for this edition of the
trade show, helping to highlight
technologies and attitudes ai-
med at sustainability across the
supply chain.
“Abrafati 2009 was a great suc-
cess. A strong adherence by the
major companies and professio-
nals and our focus on technolo-
gical innovation and sustainabi-
lity allow us to say that the trade
show provided a relevant contri-
bution for us to learn about the
paths and trends which will lead
to the paint of the future,” sums
up Dilson Ferreira, chief executi-
ve officer at Abrafati.
Corrosion Inhibitors -
Protection on target
Primarily designed to protect from corrosion,
corrosion inhibitors also provide other benefits for
paint formulations, such as waterproofing, beau-
ty, and enhanced weathering resistance, as well
as serving as adhesion promoters when combined
with certain functional minerals.
Well-suited for virtually all sorts of coatings, such
as decorative paints, automotive coatings, and
especially protective coatings, corrosion inhibitors
are extensively used to protect chemical storage
tanks, pipelines for energy goods (such as oil and
gas), and substrates exposed to sea air, among
others. Anticorrosive pigments, on the other hand,
are better-suited for protective, maritime and au-
tomotive refinish coatings.
Anticorrosive products are additives designed
to provide high performance, and basically all
protective coatings for ferrous
metals must contain some va-
riety of these products. Today,
the technological innovations
attributed to such products
provide the benefit of combining
high efficiency with the absence
of toxic components and heavy
metals, which makes them envi-
ronmentally friendly corrosion
inhibitors.
Biocides - An upturn scenario
After the disturbance earlier this
year on account of the effects of
the world economic crisis, signs
of rebound have appeared in the
second half of 2009, following
the pick-up in manufacturing.
In times of crisis, when products
and formulations are redesigned,
many products may be added
at lower rates or even elimina-
ted from the formulations in an
attempt to reduce costs. For biocides, which are
additives for use in formulations that are suscepti-
ble to microbiological contamination and therefo-
re can be neither eliminated nor reduced in con-
centration, as in some cases such a reduction may
compromise the antimicrobial action. “Accordingly,
the biocides business is closely related with the
upturn in manufacturing and the paint industry’s
