PAINT & PINTURA
manufacturer of paraffin
emulsions in Latin Ameri-
ca. In addition, we have a
distribution center in the
town of Ananindeua, Pará,
and the Isogama carrier,
a company specializing
in the transportation of
liquid cargos,” said Carlos
Rubio Ballón, industrial
manager for Isogama in
Bahia.
Conveniently located in the
Northeast industrial unit,
in the municipality of São
Sebastião do Passé, 70 kilo-
meters away from Salvador
and 30 from the Aratu port,
the new resin plant star-
ted up on May 1st, 2009.
“What we do is the result
of a partnership between
customers, suppliers and
employees, without whom it
would have been impossible
for us to become a leader
in technology and volume,
something we’re very proud
of. Isogama implemen-
ted the project in view of
the growth potential and
promising expansion of
this market segment,” said
Ballón. The initial phase of
this plant is part of the first
stage of the investment,
which upon conclusion
will amount to some R$
20 million and increase
the company’s staff by 15
percent.
Technical Article - Reichhold
low-VOC water-based
technologies versus standard
organic solvent-based systems
A major challenge facing formu-
lators of industrial coatings and
decorative paints is to constantly
seek raw materials that ena-
ble the formulation of low-VOC
systems which preserver the
main features of organic solvent-
based coatings. New water-based
coatings technologies have been
introduced for several applica-
tions lately, which technologies
perform just like or even better
than the conventional ones.
Decorative Paints – Alkyd Latex
In the decorative paint market,
the main challenge is to develop
synthetic water-based enamels,
for which acrylic latex has been
used lately as the main vehicle,
but which require the addition
of coalescing agents or co-sol-
vents to the coating formulation
for acceptable spreading and
gloss levels, which increases VOC
emissions.
On the other hand, a new tech-
nology is being introduced in the
Brazilian market for developing
resins that are alkyd in natu-
re in the form of latex (such as
Reichhold’s Beckosol Aqua line),
which are polymer emulsions
produced by a high-technology
process that only uses water as
solvent, enabling the formula-
tion of synthetic enamels which
perform similarly to organic
