PAINT & PINTURA
A wave of sustainability
Clipping
S
uppliers of raw materials in Brazil are more and more aware of the importance of manufacturing
increasingly sustainable products, meaning products that are friendlier to human health and the
environment. Advances from research and development efforts, as shown in the reports on monomers
and alkyd resins in this issue, are bringing about a new market reality, in that they are focused on
achieving what was used as theme for Abrafati 2009: “The Paint of the Future.
Of course, we still have a long way to go in Brazil. There are some substances used in the paint indus-
try which have either been banned or placed under quantity restrictions, but we still need to reach the levels
in place in Europe and the United States. Everything seems to indicate that we are on the right path, inclu-
ding the gradual growth of water-based systems.
One of the factors contributing to this process of using environmentally friendly products is the attitude of
multinationals in Brazil, as they wind up bringing in the same technologies as they use in other countries
that are much more stringent in this regard and have laws that ultimately prohibit the use of certain har-
mful substances. That’s what’s still missing in Brazil: we need to improve and introduce new legislation to
minimize such deficiency.
Another factor favoring this evolution is the market’s own pressure for products that do no harm to the envi-
ronment. As a result, companies undertake to adapt their products to meet sustainability requirements, such
as low odor, low toxicity, low VOC emission, biodegradability, and raw materials from renewable sources. This
is the true formula for the paint of the future.

Indutil – 50 years on the road
A market leader in horizontal road marking, Indu-
til Indústria de Tintas has a history of cutting-edge
technology and quality products. The 1950’s, when
Brazil opted for transportation by road and incenti-
vized its automotive industry, starting the construc-
tion of roads interconnecting cities and states, also
saw the creation of Indutil Indústria de Tintas, which
would later become a market leader in road marking,
keeping pace with the development of Brazilian cities
and roads. The company started out in 1959 at a small
plant on Rua Ana Neri, in the traditional district of
Cambuci, in São Paulo, State of São Paulo. Its foun-
der Ivo Martire started the business to manufacture
industrial coatings. The company had a modest output
at the beginning, taking up an area of 1,000 sq. m. As
the business developed, however, also boosted by the
Carlos Martire’s and Rubens Paulo Martire’s joining
the company as directors, Indutil took a different
path, keeping its original characteristics: to be a pio-
neer in the technological development of its market.
Celebrating 50 years in 2009, Indutil reaffirms its lea-
ding position as a producer of horizontal road marking
materials for urban streets and roads in Brazil, while
providing customers with coatings for general flooring
applications. In 1968, the company moved to its current
location on Rua Arinaia. In a larger area, measuring
3,500 sq. m, Indutil started to manufacture coatings for
truck platform, rigid hauler and tipper trailers.
After a rapid expansion of its product range from 1970
to 1986, Indutil supplied protective coatings for the
automotive, petrochemical and steel industries. In
that period, it officially started manufacturing its line
of road marking paints, bringing into Brazil for the
first time a solvent-based acrylic paint using a Ger-
man technology that was highly successful in Europe
at that time.
The product also achieved unquestionably positive
results in Brazil in terms of both price and performan-
ce improvement compared to existing alternatives. The
positive result of this project determined the fate and
focus of Indutil: the market in road marking paints.
