PAINT & PINTURA
sed consumption of high-solids resins featuring diffe-
rentiated monomeric compositions in order to develop
specific properties.
According to companies which have contributed infor-
mation on this market, paint manufacturers also tend
to increase in volume their use of water-based emulsifi-
cation technologies and water-soluble systems involving
alkyd resins. In some respects, however, the implemen-
tation of water-soluble alkyd resins is compromised,
such as higher costs, curing performance, and even the
culture in place in some market segments. According to
estimates by Abrafati, 80 percent of all decorative paints
have been traditionally produced using water-based
technology. For the remaining 20 percent, particularly
enamels and varnishes, there are increasing efforts to-
wards converting into water-based systems.
Graziela Calza Pandolfo, chemical engineer at WTe-
ch, points up Abrafati’s quality program as a key ally
to that market trend. “A key ally to that trend is the
Sectoral Quality Program for Decorative Paints, the
objectives of which include reaching and sustaining
quality levels determined by technical specification.
For the alkyd resins business, technical specifications
contemplate the solids content, and manufacturers
need high-solids resins to meet that requirement.”
For Antonio Carrascosa Filho, market development
and technical service manager for coatings at Reich-
hold, a market paradigm has been broken by the pos-
sibility to totally eliminate organic solvents from alkyd
resin formulations, enabling formulators to come up
with products featuring lower VOC emission levels
than systems which use acrylic emulsions do. “We are
talking about alkyd latex, which we have made availa-
ble in the Brazilian market from the locally produced
Beckosol Aqua line, officially launched at Abrafati
2009. With this launch we have caught up with first-
world countries in terms of technological innovation,
but with a further advantage of a highly competitive
price compared to acrylic emulsions,” he says.

and training in applications and operation. Several
courses and classes are available all year long in the
city of São Paulo, such as Colorimetry – Basics of Color
and Appearance, Colorimetry Applied to Metallic and
Pearlescent Colors, Color Management in Graphic
Arts, Hands-on Color Management in Graphic Arts,
Color Management in Digital Photography, Color
Management for Large Formats, 500 Series Operating
Training, and Eye-One Operating Training.
Those training programs are provided at the Coralis
Technology Center, where students have access to com-
puters, printers, spectrophotometers, light chambers
and other pieces of equipment to put what their lear-
ning into action. In addition to the programs provided
at the Center, in-company training is also available, as
is the Personal Color Training method. The courses are
