Specialty and Effect Pigments
- The magic of effects
The market in specialty pigments
and effect pigments has overcome
the crisis and emerged stronger,
in spite of all of the difficulties
facing it in the course of 2009.
This is because important seg-
ments, such as the automotive
industry and the manufacturing
segment in general, have levera-
ged the use of this type of pig-
ment.
According to Antonio Labecca
Filho, sales manager for Aldoro,
in the automotive industry there
is a clear preference for the color
silver, and also great apprecia-
tion for other metallic colors. Of
all cars made in Brazil, silver-
colored ones are estimated at 65
percent. “Easy maintenance, bet-
ter resale value and, especially,
the appeal of silver and other
metallic colors have formed this
image. In industrial coatings, in
addition to their effect features,
metallic pigments can be applied
where their barrier effect will
favor the strength and durability
of the coating. The great hiding
power of leafing aluminum can
perfectly revert some adverse
situations, as it provides coated
parts with protection, such as in
the typical example of the coating
on gas canisters,” he stresses.
For his part, Forscher’s director
Harry Heise talks about that the
market for specialty pigments
and effect pigments from a stan-
dpoint of segmentation by effect
and product. “There is a rather
specific market for specialty or
functional pigments, such as
thermochromic, photochromic,
luminescent, phosphorescent and
hydrochromic pigments, and the
demand is not so big. However,
over the past two years, a varie-
ty of innovative initiatives have
