nologies with sustainability features, such as high-
solids formulations, and low-VOC (Volatile Organic
Compounds) or VOC-free waterborne systems. “All
environmentally friendlier products do, to a greater
or lesser extent, benefit humans and provide bene-
fits in terms of both money and image. They include
a lower risk of environmental accidents, improved
productivity and functional efficiency, production
cost savings, occupational health protection, and
strengthening of a positive image among customers,
suppliers and end consumers,” says Flávio Martins,
regional sales manager, Central and South America,
at Evonik.
Today, even though most investments are channeled
into the production of environment-friendlier mo-
nomers, and companies are aware of this trend, the
trend itself is materializing in a gradual fashion.
“Most investments, by both users and manufactu-
rers, have been made in the development of envi-
ronmentally friendly products. We are aware that
the change will happen slowly due to both com-
mercial and technical concerns, but the migration
is taken for
a fact by
major users,
and the
replacement
of traditio-
nal, envi-
ronmentally
harmful
system with
environ-
ment-frien-
dly alter-
natives has
been spre-
ading, and
monomers
play a key
role in that
replace-
ment,” says
Rafael San-
tos, from
Quiminutri’s
technical
sales sup-
port.
In the eyes of Gerardo Victal, commodities sales
director for Bandeirante Brazmo, as far as special-
ty chemicals go, including for the paint industry, a
clear concern is noticed about occupational health
and the environment. “Because the acrylic-based
formulations are moving toward the water-based
technology, and the UV technology is friendlier as it
is, there’s a trend towards developing raw materials
featuring a lower toxicological potential. As regards
monomers used in commodities, the market tends
to move toward water-based coatings containing
innovative functional monomers to replace acrylic
resins with other systems, such as vinyl versatate
products.”
Another highlight of the monomer market lies in
technological developments in LEO (low extractable
odor) products. “They are low-odor products that
are key to manufacturers of food-grade packaging
materials, and for products produced from mate-
rials from renewable sources. It is worth pointing
out that UV coatings cannot be used in food-con-
tact packaging materials due to the migration of
harmful compounds to the food, so they are used
only in boxes and bags that do not have any direct
contact with the food. Products manufactured using
raw materials from renewable sources are a trend,
and Cytec already provides a range of diluents and
resins that are focused on sustainable industrial
processes,” says Alberto Matera, sales and marke-
ting manager, South America, for Cytec. In this
context, the word sustainability is certainly consoli-
dated by the manufacturers’ initiatives.
Feitintas 2010 – Trade show stirs up paint
industry
Held every other year since 1998, Feitintas (short
for Trade Show for Manufacturers of Paints, Coa-
tings and Related Products) has grown each edi-
tion, whether in number of exhibitors and visitors
or exhibit space. As a result, it has become one of
the industry’s most important events in all of Latin
America.
Organized by the Union of Paint and Varnish Manu-
facturers in the State of São Paulo, otherwise known
for short as Sitivesp, the trade show comprises the
entire paint production and distribution chain, in-
