general. In addition, their main features are low volatile organic
compound contents and better solubility, dilution and evapora-
tion. They have different physicochemical properties due to their
composition, and are fit for the solvent-based, water-based and
high-solids technologies.
With the restrictions imposed by pieces of legislation like the
Montreal Protocol, manufacturers started replacing traditional
solvents, such as aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, with oxy-
genated solvents. Thereupon, the demand for these solvents has
increased each year. “The demand for oxygenated solvents has in-
creased because the restrictions on hydrocarbons are increasingly
strict. The technologies for solvent-based paint formulations most
used, and the costs of raw materials are still very attractive com-
pare to those of other technologies, but the increase will be limited
as water-based, high-solids (including UV curing) and powder
coatings will be demanded by law and, as a result, by users. VOC
emissions to the atmosphere are more and more restricted and the
subject of stricter inspections, at that will put a limit to growth in
oxygenated solvents, such limit to be set by new regulations. The
growth rate varies from one product to another. The mean incre-
ase in consumption is 20 percent, ranging from individual rates of
10 percent to some in excess of 40 percent,” says Victor Luis Maluf
Amarilla, technical and marketing director at Kalium.
Corrosion Inhibitors - Assured protection
Corrosion inhibitors are synonym with protection and durability
for surfaces that require greater care when coated.
Corrosion inhibitors are recommended for virtually all kinds of
paints, such as automotive finishes, decorative paints and pro-
tective coatings. It is worth pointing out applications in specific
situations, such as parts, areas and internal and external surfaces
exposed to the action of the weather, as well as aggressive environ-
ments, such as factories, ships and aircraft.
With the use of new technologies, in addition to the main function
of preventing corrosion, other properties have been developed for
corrosion inhibitors, such as reduced sensitivity to water and grea-
ter weathering resistance. Appropriately treated products provided
more value for money, as they extend their useful life, resulting in
savings and enhanced durability.
Since corrosion inhibitors play a key role in paint formulations, this
market keeps pace with the growth in the country’s economy and
manufacturing sector, which is, in fact, running in full swing. The
2010 scenario will be sustained, with even better growth prospects
for 2011 thanks to new investments, such as those made in infras-
tructure, home building, the automotive industry and others.
