PAINT & PINTURA
Clipping
Editorial
A busy beginning of the year
This year’s first issue is filled with important information on the paint market. Our highlights include a special
report on the paint market in the country’s Northeast region, an important paint production and consumption
center with 87 manufacturers, 32 of which are based in the State of Ceará alone. The piece also provides a full
profile of the region’s paint industry, including the market shares of major manufacturers.
To further contribute to the development of the region’s paint market, Agnelo Editora is organizing the 1st
Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology Forum for the Northeast Region, to be held on March 24 and 25, 2011 at
the Iracema Beach Blue Tree Premium, in Fortaleza, Ceará.
The State of Ceará has been selected to host the first edition of the forum because it stands out nationwide for
its large number of local manufacturers and the growth that they have experienced over the past few years.
Paint & Pintura also brings you a piece on “Pigment Dispersions,” which have become a world trend due to the
excellent advantages and environmental benefits that they provide, one on “Metallic Packaging,” showing some
of the technological advances in steel containers recognized as environmentally compliant, and one on “Tin-
ting Systems,” focusing on the development and improvements achieved in equipment, as well as the services,
technical support and training programs provided by manufacturers.
Another highlight is our exclusive interview with Dilson Ferreira, chief executive officer at Abrafati (short for
Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers), who tells us all the details and results of the Industry-Specific
Quality Program (PSQ, in Portuguese) for Decorative Paints, which is a successful initiative with 17 certified
companies and 9 in the process of obtaining certification, totaling 26 companies who account for 85 to 90 per-
cent of Brazil’s total paint production. Today, with the PSQ, not only is paint quality assured, the program has
also lead to regulations for the Brazilian paint market.
Now, to all companies in the paint industry, please receive this as my special invitation to participate in the 1st
Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology Forum for the Northeast Region. See you there!
Enjoy reading.

Interview – PSQ - Certified quality
Abrafati (short for Brazilian Association of Paint
Manufacturers) has been carrying out its Indus-
try-Specific Quality Program (PSQ, in Portuguese)
for Decorative Paints since 2001 aiming at im-
proving paint quality and organizing the market.
The PSQ is part of the PBQP-H (Portuguese for the
Ministry of Cities’ Brazilian Habitat Quality and
Productivity Program).
With 17 certified companies and 9 in the process
of being certified, it can be said to be a successful
program, as it has reached 26 companies whi-
ch account for 85 to 90 percent of Brazil’s total
output. In addition, 42 percent of the non-confor-
ming brands have been either adjusted or remo-
ved from the marketplace.
Before the PSQ, decorative paint manufactu-
rers had no quality references, which resulted in
countless problems. Following the implementation
of the program, the paint industry started to be
organized, and more than 30 technical standar-
ds have been developed by the ABNT (Brazilian
Association for Technical Standards), enabling a
quality-assured paint production.
Abrafati’s chief executive officer Dilson Ferreira
says that the PSQ is now a quality reference for
