Suvinil’s 50 years – A successful business all along
Suvinil —part of the BASF group, which will be celebra-
ting in April 100 years of business in the Brazilian ma-
rket— is celebrating this March its 50 years of activity
and success in Brazil.
To sustain its leadership (Suvinil is the leader in the
premium paint segment, with a market share in excess
of 60 percent, and has been the leader in the domestic
paint market for more than 20 years) has a consistent
business strategy in place, the pillars of which include
good customer relationships, innovation, and major
investments in the Suvinil brand. Its commitment to
meet the requirements of the consumer market has led
Suvinil to put together a refined innovation process.
According to Eugênio Luporini Neto, Vice President,
Decorative Paints and Automotive Refinish, South
America, innovation permeates the organization’s
entire process, involving not only products, but also
processes and new technologies. It all begins with
intensive, targeted brainstorming efforts. Coordinated
by a department specifically dedicated to innovation
management, this process stretches across the board
at the company. It is then followed by a classification
of ideas according to such factors as strategy, market
opportunity, return on investment, and competitive
edge. Thereupon, the best ideas are turned into pro-
jects and put through a thorough process of meeting
innovation requirements. “Only when the whole com-
pany is engaged does innovation actually materialize.
From the coming of an idea, through the management
of process and the making of a product at the labora-
tory, to the sale of that product, everybody is involved.
And our results reflect that passion. It is cycle that is
renewed upon each successful outcome.”
To keep it up, BASF invests 3 percent of its revenues
worldwide in research and development, which results
in innovative, quality products. Currently, according to
Luporini Neto, nearly 70 percent of Suvinil’s revenues
come from products that were launched in the past five
years, such as suede effect paints from the company’s
new acrylic line, which, in addition to being odorless,
decrease spilling by 70 percent, the new Suvinil line of
flooring systems and the new Suvinil synthetic enamel,
which is covered by a ten-year warranty. “It is worth
stressing that Suvinil was the first brand to introduce
odorless paints into the market and to include PET bot-
tles in the production process, replacing the resin that
was previously used,” says the vice president.
