PAINT & PINTURA
It is also very in the slurry market
to stick to the technical require-
ments of Abrafati’s quality pro-
gram, and to work closely with
customers to ensure daily delive-
ries, low inventory levels and qua-
lity products. “Over the past few
years, innovation has been focused
on adding to our products proper-
ties that are key to formulators,
such as enhanced washability, gre-
ater hiding power and improved
yields and weathering resistance,
so that our customers can achieve
cost reduction and performance
enhancement in their end pro-
ducts,” says Victor Trevisani, sales
manager at Imerys.
Montevidiu’s Industrial Manager
Roberto Santiago points out that
the main requirements of paint
manufacturers are for improved
quality, shorter process times and
lower process costs. “Slurries have
been playing an increasingly dis-
tinguished role in paint companies
as titanium dioxide extenders.”
Biocides - Green protection
After significant market changes,
biocides nowadays are products
with a minimum environmental
impact, low toxicity and high effi-
ciency.
The biocides market has been
displaying fast growth in sales
this year, which growth has been
boosted by the automotive and ship-
-building industries and especially
by the outstanding performance
in building and construction, with
excellent prospects for construction
works in connection with the FIFA
World Cup and the Olympic Games.
However, the demand for biocides
tends to follow the seasonality of the
paint industry, where production is
usually larger in the 2nd half.
For the 1st half of 2011, the ma-
rket kept up with the oil price in-
crease in the international market,
which affected the prices of some
raw materials of general use in
the industry. Fortunately, however,
there were no biocide availability
problems in the Brazilian market.
Playing a fundamental role in
paint formulations, biocides
ensure a quality coating on both
wet and dry films, which has led
manufacturers to consider more
and more the benefits that they
provide, rather than just focusing
on prices. In addition, an impor-
tant trend in the biocides market
is towards products with low VOC
contents or free of certain com-
pounds on account of ever-more
stringent occupational and regula-
tory restrictions.
The market needs not only quality
products, but also technical sup-
port for a proper use and perfor-
mance assessment of biocides in
paint formulations.
To sum it up, biocides must ideally
be able to both control bacterial
proliferation inside the paint can
and prevent fungi from growing
on the film that is formed by the
paint applied to any surface. The
appropriate biocide for the paint
industry is one that preserves the
paint in those situations, with a
good performance and using envi-
ronmentally friendly additives.
Distribution - A growing
branch
Operating since 2001, Bandeiran-
te Brazmo’s João Pessoa unit was
created to supply customers in the
Northeast region. “We are in our
own area of 7,500 square meters,
with a built-up area of 1,500 squa-
re meters, and a storage capacity
of 600 tons of dry cargo and 170
cubic meters for liquid bulks. We
currently have 15 direct employees
and mean monthly sales of 800
tons,” says Eduardo Barranjard,
manager for the Northeast region
at Bandeirante Brazmo.
The João Pessoa unit supplies
customers in the States of Alagoas,
Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande
do Norte, Ceará, Maranhão, Piauí
and Pará. “Logistically speaking,
however, we deliver goods to
customers in Alagoas, Pernambu-
co, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte
and Ceará. We also have a branch
in Bahia the serves the States of
Bahia and Sergipe,” says Barran-
jard, adding that the products
available to the paint industry
from that branch include alipha-
tic, aromatic, oxygenated, glycol
and acetone solvents, pigments,
resins, additives and more.
In addition to the paint industry,
the João Pessoa unit also sup-
plies manufacturers of cleaning
products, cosmetics, PU, rubber
for footwear, metals, etc. “We are
based in João Pessoa, which places
us right at the logistic center of
the Northeast region, that is, at a
reasonable distance to the region’s
major producers, and that enables
us to provide some differentiated
services for our customers. While
delivering goods on a CIF basis,
we provide a highly skilled tech-
nical service for our customers,
and our extensively experienced
chemists live in the main cities of
the region, where they’re dedicated
full-time to cooperating with our
customers in product development
and improvement, while presen-
ting them with the new products
coming from our distributed com-
panies,” Barranjard points out.
