Sustainable innovation on
the agenda
The October issue of Paint & Pintura Magazine brings you comprehensive information on the 12th Internatio-
nal Paint Congress. The focal themes for the Congress, which is also known as Abrafati 2011, are innovation
and sustainability, and they are covered in a variety of ways by presentations on significant technological ad-
vances. Consisting of 72 lectures and four plenary meetings, the program for the three-day congress contem-
plates new ideas, researches in progress, new developments and the latest findings in the paint industry.
In addition, the program covers several other themes of paramount importance to the paint value chain, such
as occupational health and hygiene, VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions and cases on the use of sus-
tainability as a profitability tool for businesses.
Several activities and functions have been added to the Congress, such as the papers that will be on display in
the Poster Section, the 2nd Abrafati-RadTech South America Seminar, and the Seminar on Environmental and
Safety Issues in the Paint Industry, to be held by Abrafati.
See also the interview with Gisele Bonfim, Abrafati’s Technical and Environmental Manager and member of
the Scientific Committee for the 12th International Paint Congress, who tells us all of the details of this major
event for the paint industry. “If you want to see the big picture of the state of the art and the future of the
paint industry, you’ve just got to attend the congress,” stresses Gisele.
The interview is followed by the series of lectures and plenary meetings on the program for the 12th Interna-
tional Paint Congress.
Our special articles cover three other themes of relevance to the paint industry, providing an overview of
the current state of affairs in terms of innovation and business, including novel defoamers, epoxy resins and
organic pigments. It is worth pointing out the significant growth that the organic pigment business has been
experiencing, as heavy-metal inorganic pigments are replaced with “greener” alternatives. The article on defo-
amers demonstrates that Brazilian manufacturers are constantly searching for defoamers that deliver excel-
lent performance, while having a lower environmental impact. The same goes to the market in epoxy resins, as
waterborne systems gain more and more ground in the industry.
These things show that the market is really changing, for the better and in a responsible way, to ensure a bet-
ter future for the world.
Enjoy!
