well-defined scales and tolerance values for colo-
rimetric control, which is very much like a law by
which paint manufacturers must abide for meeting
the requirements of very demanding customers,
which are auto makers that paint hundreds of cars,
motorcycles and trucks every day and, therefore,
have an excellent sampling universe to discuss even
minor variances in color or the effects that such
color may have. For those known as industrial or
transportation coatings, the colorimetric adjust-
ment efforts have been playing out substantially as
they are in automotive coatings, with a basic diffe-
rence in tolerance values and the fact that many
solid colors are produced with a small number of
effect colors compared to those of automotive coa-
tings, where effect colors are part of the commercial
appeal,” ponders Sergio Roberto Marigonda, MAST’s
sales manager.
There is a sharply growing trend in automotive co-
atings manufacturing towards seeking to updating
knowledge as colors move from being created by ab-
sorption pigments (solid colors) and to carrying new
effect pigments (metallic, pearlescent, etc.), leading
the people in the industry to view, assess, quantify
and control colors in a new, completely different
way, which includes replacing obsolete instruments
with state-of-the-art spectrophotometers for mea-
suring colors and their effects.
Coralis’ Technical Director Pedro Gargalaca says
that the company has made substantial contribu-
tions to increasing the color culture in Brazil and
Latin America. “In 2011, we have provided 110
courses in Color Management and Colorimetry,
influencing a large number of people in this market
segment. As a professional instructor, I’ve trained
more than 15,000 students for this market.”
