pact of automotive coatings on carbon footprint
of the production and use of automobiles. A vast
range of improvements achieved over the past se-
veral years have substantially reduced automobile
emissions from a level considerably above 100,000
kg of CO2 equivalent per vehicle throughout its
lifecycle. I reviewed the contributions that ma-
nufacturers of automotive coatings have made to
that reduction, as well as others that can be made
in the future,” Manring said.
The last day of the show was opened with a lecture
delivered by Louis McCulloch, an English consul-
tant specializing in the paint industry with more
than 30 years’ experience holding executive posi-
tions at paint companies. For 10 years, he publi-
shed The Coatings Agenda, and he is now conduc-
ting studies and preparing reports focusing on the
market to assess the possibilities of technology ac-
quisitions and transfers. Mr. McCulloch has exten-
sive knowledge of the decorative paint and protec-
tive, automotive and industrial coatings. “The work
I do has given me comprehensive knowledge of the
paint industry on a global basis. I introduced the
trends that I have identified, stressing the effects
of the globalization and the consolidation process.
I also addressed key themes for the future concer-
ning technology, regulations and marketing, while
commenting on the current situation in the world
market,” Mr. McCulloch said.
While dozens of lectures covered some of the most
relevant current themes affecting the paint value
chain, the exhibition confirmed the general enthu-
siasm about the business potential of Brazil and
Latin America. At thoroughly decorated booths,
companies made their leading specialists and broad
variety of new developments and solutions availa-
ble to thousands of visitors.
“The advances in science and technology shown at
Abrafati 2011 will result in development, growth
and business generation, which are essential con-
ditions for Brazil’s paint industry to stay dynamic,
strong and up-to-date,” said Mr. Ferreira.

trochemical Distributors, known for short as Edb-
quim, to be held by Associquim-Sincoquim (short
for Brazilian Association of Chemical and Petroche-
mical Distributors and São Paulo State Chemical
and Petrochemical Wholesalers Union), will take
place from March 14 to 16, 2012 at Tivoli Ecoresort
in Praia do Forte, Bahia.
The theme for this edition of the conference is
“Green Chemistry and Petrochemistry: Impacts
on Distribution,” a reflection about the future of
chemical and petrochemical distribution and the
“green chemistry”, stressing ethanol and gas as a
more environmentally friendly concept of energy.
