and brings together specialists of the metal packaging industry from many parts
of the world, who attend to engage in discussions and share information on the
industry’s developments and trends, while competing for awards for the most in-
novative metal packaging materials.
For this year’s edition, four cans developed by Brazilian companies stood out. The
three-piece welded tinplate spray can produced by Brasilata for AP Winner, part
of the Würth Group, the expanded tinplate can produced by Metalúrgica Mocóca
for Nestlé’s Nescafé coffee, and the new textured print on Suvinil’s 18-liter tinplate
pail, from Litografia Valença, won Silver awards. Litografia Valença also won a
Bronze award in the Prototype category for its 3.6-liter tinplate can with 3D visual
effects.
Antônio Carlos Teixeira Álvares, President of the National Metal Printing Industry
Union (SINIEM, the Portuguese initials) and President of the IPA (International
Packaging Association), attended The Canmaker Summit and remarks, “I think
it’s a very important thing that out of 35 metal packaging innovations from all
over the world, four winners are Brazilian companies. This achievement bolsters
the country’s recognition around the world. I’m very glad to see the international
projection of the technological innovations of Brazilian-made metal packaging
products among so many other manufacturers.”
The ultimate Cans of the Year Award for 2012 was won by the tinplate container
with embossed decoration for Chivas Regal Scotch whisky (“Chivas Regal – Made
for Gentlemen”) manufactured by French company Virojanglor.
“Green” Solutions at Greenbuilding Brasil
The paint and coatings industry, which was represented at Greenbuilding Brasil
International Conference & Expo 2012 by the companies Sherwin-Williams, Uni-
verso Tintas, Suvinil and Hydronorth, demonstrates is capacity for innovation by
offering products that combine high performance with environmental preserva-
tion. The use of environmentally friendly paints is one of the certification require-
ments and can help to score up to 12 points, depending on the items incorporated
into the building.
A pioneer in the LEED certification, Sherwin-Williams introduced the Metalatex
Eco thermal comfort roof coatings, which make you home warmer in winter and
cooler in summer, among other products. The solution reflects the sun’s rays, the-
reby lowering the temperature on the coated surface by up to 30°C and the power
consumed by fans and air-conditioning units by up to 20 percent. The paints from
Hydronorth’s EcoPintura line are formulated with sustainable raw materials that
ensure VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions of less than 100 grams per liter.
Universo Tintas is banking on the points of difference of its hygienic coatings
developed in partnership with Clariant. Certified under the Japanese standard
JIS Z 2801:2006, these coatings create an anti-microbial electromagnetic field
that prevents the growth of microorganisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
a major cause of hospital infections. While combating such undesirable bacteria,
they are low-odor, fast-curing waterborne products. Suvinil AntiBacteria, which
reduces bacteria on the coated surface by 99 percent for two years, was the star
at the booth set up by BASF, the proprietor of the Suvinil brand. It was the coating
applied onto the surfaces of CasaE, a concept home available for visitors to Green-
building to take technical tours.
