Optimism for the Industry
From the outset, there are great expectations for the year 2013, which brings promise of an upswing in the economy.
Accordingly, the paint industry is entering the year with rather optimistic forecasts. Abrafati (short in Portuguese for
Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers), for one, estimates that the industry will outgrow the GDP by 1 percen-
tage point this year.
But the good news is not all concentrated in the industry’s own growth. The articles on pigment dispersions, metallic
packaging materials and colorimetry brought to you in this issue show technological advances and evolution in these
different segments of the paint market, which did not live up to their performance expectations for 2012, but are all
set to meet the increase in demand that is expected to commence this year and extend for the years to come due to the
major events that will be hosted in Brazil, such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Another highlight of this issue is the article on China Coat, a major event for the paint and coatings industry which
took place on November 28 to 30 in Guangzhou, China, in an area of 25,000 square meters where 25,000 visitors were
received, more than 4,000 of whom came from foreign countries. In addition, exhibitors numbered around a thou-
sand, 70 percent of which were Chinese businesses, and 30 percent companies based in other countries. Not only are
the data that the article provides on the Chinese paint market impressive, they also show that it is the largest and
fastest-growing market on the planet. For the next five years, it is expected to grow 10 percent annually, boosted by
the country’s urbanization process, significant development in building and construction and demand for better hou-
sing conditions. As a matter of fact, the total output for 2011 is estimated at 10 million tons and US$ 19 billion. The
Chinese believe that these figures have pushed their share in the world market to approximately 20 percent.
Speaking of international trade shows, Agnelo Editora will be participating for the first time in European Coatings,
which will take place from March 19 to 21, 2013 in Nuremberg, Germany. We will bring back firsthand information
on all innovations and latest developments in nano-particles, pigments and additives, as well as production and
application techniques, i.e. all new developments in raw materials and processes for the paint industry. For further
information on the trade show and exhibitors, see page 44.
The January issue also brings you full coverage of the events held by the industry’s leading entities —Abrafati, Associ-
quim-Sincoquim, and Sitivesp—, which presented their respective awards for the year 2012 in grand style.
This is but the first of many issues that are coming out in 2013. Just you wait and watch Paint & Pintura Magazine as
we carry on with our mission of sharing the industry’s most important news and information with the entire paint
and coatings supply chain.
We stick together in 2013!

Metallic Packaging - Innovative Effects, Shapes and
Sizes
Suppliers of metallic packaging materials stand out
for the special effects of the textured printing on
their products, in line with a policy that contemplates
innovative initiatives, quality and safety, as well as
resistance to the stresses arising out of transporta-
tion, stacking and storage activities.
With their extensive presence in the paint market,
metallic containers feature such indispensable pro-
perties as safety and good resistance to transporta-
tion and stacking, content protection, high quality
label printing (in color and details) and models speci-
fically designed for transporting hazardous products.
The packaging industry has been improving by means
of innovative manufacturing processes and diversi-
ty in packaging designs. Metallic packaging manu-
facturers currently provide a variety of packaging
shapes and sizes in order to meet the paint industry’s
demand and requirements. In addition, as the paint
industry evolves in Brazil, so does the demand for
quality-assured packaging products. And steel cans
