are considered the most reliable packaging materials and capable of safely
meeting these requirements.
As for industry figures, the Brazilian Steel Packaging Association, kno-
wn for short as Abeaço, has announced that the paint industry currently
consumes 37 percent of all steel packaging products made in Brazil (final
value for 2012). “The total sales of steel packaging companies reached R$
4.5 billion in 2010, up 7.2 percent in relation to 2009. The aggregate sales
increase from 2007 is 5.8 percent in nominal terms. Estimates from FGV
(Fundação Getulio Vargas) for the year 2011 indicate a decrease in sales of
approximately 2 percent, whereas sales for 2012, while picking up compa-
red to 2011, did not rise to 2010 levels. This is partly due to the economic
downturn that was experienced in that period,” says Abeaço’s executive
manager Thaís Fagury.
Two manufacturing segments have a strong impact on the performance of
the steel packaging industry: foods and coatings. In the period from 2009
to 2011, the two of them saw their sales considerably increase by 16 and
41 percent, respectively, thereby justifying positive expectations for manu-
facturers of metallic packaging products. “For 2010, the industry accoun-
ted for approximately 0.15 percent of the manufacturing sector’s entire
share in the GDP, totaling R$ 802 million. When we look at the historical
data series on the industry’s share in the turnover of the manufacturing
sector, we can see that the industry has been losing its relative importance
over the past few years. These statistics are particularly upsetting because
they show that the industry’s performance is below the average for the
manufacturing sector,” Thaís says.
Pigment Dispersions - Smart Use
Pigment dispersions are increasingly used in the paint industry due to
the numerous advantages that they provide, including the fact that they
allow manufacturers to focus on their formulations, thereby saving time
and energy and reducing costs.
The market for pigment dispersions has evolved a lot in the paint indus-
try. By buying pigment dispersions that are ready to use, paint manufac-
turers can eliminate from their production processes the laborious and
costly stage that they would otherwise involve, thus saving both time and
money.
The paint industry has been displaying growth in its demand for disper-
sions, especially for the decorative paint segment. Pigment preparations
for decorative paints are divided into in-plant systems (tinting performed
in the paint plant) and in-can systems (tinting at shops). Shops also provi-
de pigment preparations in tubes, so that end consumers can apply them
to the paint and thus formulate their colors by themselves. A gradual in-
crease in consumption of pigment dispersions is now also observed in the
industrial coatings segment.
As pigment dispersions are on the rise, their suppliers, too, have to adjust
their products to the industry’s technical requirements, seeking higher
quality products which deliver specific properties, such as APEO-free
