Events Shake Up the Market
I am very proud to begin this editorial with the news that Agnelo Editora’s chief executive officer Agnelo de Barros Neto
has been presented with a most important award by the Union of Paint and Coatings Manufacturers and Vegetable and
Animal Oil Processers in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro (known for short in Portuguese as Sintirj): the Sintirj Award for
Personality of the Year. Mr. Barros Neto was given the award in recognition of his contribution to spreading information
on the paint and coatings industry over the past few decades and his groundbreaking efforts to encourage knowledge-
-sharing in all of Brazil’s geographic regions through the Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology and Management Forums.
As Mr. Barros Neto is touched and honored by the recognition, so is Agnelo Editora’s entire team, who thank Sintirj and
all members of the industry who have in any way helped us achieve it. The best suppliers of the year were also presented
with awards at the dinner function held by Sintirj on March 14 in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Another major event in the month of March was the European Coatings Show 2013, held in Nuremberg, Germany. Having
participated for the first time, Agnelo Editora brought back to the Brazilian market news on the most important deve-
lopments and trends in the paint industry. For this year’s edition, the trade show had 960 exhibitors and 27,000 visitors
over three days, who were shown a vast range of novel products, raw materials, inputs, equipment and services. Agnelo
Editora’s editor-in-chief Marcos Mila provided full coverage of the trade show.
Saving the best for last, the “Events” section brings you an article on the 8th Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology and
Management Forum for the Northeast Region, which was held in Recife, Pernambuco with 152 registered attendees from
the various steps of the paint supply chain. The forum was an absolute success, with high-end technical lectures specifi-
cally on themes that hold great interest for the industry, such as “Reverse Logistics”, “Sustainability in the Paint Industry”,
“Regional Paint Market”, and “The Current Scenario and Prospects for Growth.”
Check out the following pages for our full coverage of these major events, including photos, testimonies and a lot more.
Enjoy!

Inorganic Pigments - Irreplaceable in Properties
The technologies embodied in inorganic pigments are firmly
established and widespread in the paint industries for provi-
ding excellent resistance properties, and these products can be
applied in systems where enhanced performance and durability
are required. In addition, inorganic pigments are still a great
coloring alternative due to the positive cost-benefit ratio that
they provide, as well as their numerous advantages, such as
high hiding power, opacity, durability, easy dispersion, etc.
As the requirements for either the elimination or strict limi-
tations on heavy metals grow in Brazil and worldwide, manu-
facturers of inorganic chemicals seek alternatives to comply
with the applicable laws and regulations. In Brazil, the impact
of the cost increase has been postponing the replacement of
more critical metals, but paint manufacturers are evidently
concerned and engaged in seeking alternatives that will justify
the difference in costs by providing significant advantages, and
pigment suppliers are there to assist them with the relevant stu-
dies. Some kinds of inorganic pigments have stood out for their
performance and been increasingly used in the paint industry.
Manufacturers of such specific lines of inorganic pigments
have succeeded in adjusting the chemistry of these products to
market requirements,” says Colornet’s technical sales manager
Silvia Ferreira de Gouveia.
In particular, iron oxide-based inorganic pigments are constan-
tly evolving, as they hold major relevance to the manufacturing
process regardless of the type of paint being produced thank
to their opacity, clear shade, high dispersability and other
properties. “In a more and more competitive world concer-
ning process optimization and cost reductions, as well as the
internationalization of businesses and compliance with new
regulations, the demand for increasingly safer and environ-
mentally friendlier chemicals is growing rapidly. In this context,
Lanxess has innovated our processes to minimize the level of
