requirements, but also anticipate future trends in
the global market, including those towards more
sustainable products with low VOC contents.
With 85 years’ tradition of meeting and antici-
pating market requirements, Reichhold is a solid
company by nature. “Therefore, we work to sup-
ply the demand in a sustainable manner, while
investing in research and launching greener,
low-VOC technologies, so that our customers can
keep pace with the most varied of global and lo-
cal trends,” says Reichhold’s market development
manager André Oliveira.
Reichhold is focused on innovation and sustain-
ability, the foundations of its research and devel-
opment activities, as well as the solutions that are
introduced as a result. “In the alkyd resin market,
we channel our efforts into developing high-solids
alkyd resins for our Beckosol and Amberlac lines.
But our primary focus is on the development and
introduction of our Beckosol Aqua and Beckosol
Eco lines of alkyd emulsions and alkyd latices,
which provide Brazilian manufacturers with an
innovative global technology so that they can
make greener paints,” Oliveira says.
The Beckosol Aqua and Beckosol Eco lines con-
sist of water-based products that are entirely
dilutable in water as well. “While these products
allow formulators to achieve VOC levels as low as
15 grams per liter, 40 to 60 percent of their raw
materials are obtained from renewable sources.
The two of these features combined mean a high
level of sustainability. With the excellent ad-
vantage of having a polymer structure based on
seed oils and polyols and being totally soluble in
water, these innovative lines of green solutions
from Reichhold come to further the paint indus-
try’s plan to produce highly sustainable low-VOC
paints and coatings in full compliance with the
strictest international standards within the next
few years,” Oliveira assures.
The main benefits paint manufactures can draw
from using the Beckosol Aqua and Beckosol Eco al-
kyd resins include, according to Oliveira, low cost,
using water instead of organic solvents, low odor,
non-flammability, allowing paint production and
application equipment to be cleaned with water,
the high performance of alkyd resins, high adhe-
sion and flexibility, a broad formulation spectrum
ranging from clear coats to colored coatings and from matte to
high-gloss finishes, reduced dependence on the petrochemical
supply chain, and their market position as green products.
Raw Materials - A Promising Investment
Watercryl, one of Brazil’s leading suppliers of additives for the
paint industry, such as the Reolit acrylic thickeners and spe-
cialty additives for decorative paints and industrial coatings,
with manufacturing and technical facilities located in the town
of Palmital, São Paulo, was acquired in late 2012 by Elements, a
UK-based specialty chemical company with operations all over
the world. “The Watercryl acquisition will significantly increase
Elementis’ presence in Latin America and provide a local platform
for our specialty chemicals business, thus speeding up our expan-
sion in the region with the Reolit line of acrylic thickeners and
several specialty additives for decorative paints and industrial
coatings,” says Carlos Roberto Coelho, Elementis Specialties’ busi-
ness manager for Latin America.
The products from Watercryl are complementary to Elementis’
portfolio. “The two portfolios combined will enable paint manu-
facturers to have the rheology requirements of both their water
