New Sections in Paint & Pintura
Innovation has become an integral part of our philosophy and, with that in mind, we came up with yet another improve-
ment for Paint & Pintura Magazine readers. As you turn the pages of this issue, you will find two new sections: “Radar”,
which brings news on facts, rumors and speculations involving the paint industry; and “Almanac”, consisting of trivia and
stories of companies and personalities in the paint supply chain. The Radar section will be signed by Agnelo Editora’s chief
executive officer Agnelo de Barros Neto, who makes a point of bringing to the market and commenting on the industry’s
hottest news. Providing the market with top-notch information like this is the mission of Agnelo Editora. And more new
features are coming up. Just wait and see!
Another highlight of this issue is the article on the 13th International Paint Congress, which will take place from Septem-
ber 16 to 18 at Transamércia Expo Center, in São Paulo. Altogether, 72 lectures will be delivered in the course of the three-
day congress, which will also include more than 50 papers at the Poster section, presentations conducted by renowned
experts at four Podium Discussions, and the Abrafati-RadTech Radiation Curing Seminar, providing attendees with an
accurate overview of the present and future of the paint industry. Make sure you read about all details of this major event.
The special reports on mineral fillers, wetting agents and organic pigments, which include contributions from key compa-
nies in these segments, stress new developments, innovations and more sustainable formulations, in line with this major
world trend towards sustainability.
Also, have a look at the pieces on the latest moves of important companies in the industry, such as Axalta, announcing its
intent to compete in the decorative paint market, Elementis, which invests in Brazil through its acquisition of Watercryl,
Reichhold, introducing greener, more sustainable acrylic resin technologies, and Rhodia, which is expanding its share in
the Latin American market for emulsion, paint and coating additives and surfactants, as well as the anniversary reports
on Hidracor (50 years) anniversary and True Color (10 years).
Enjoy!

Organic Pigments - A Green, High-
Performance Option
The market in inorganic pigments has been displaying
rapid growth, especially due to the trend towards replacing
heavy metal-based pigments and the development of high-
performance pigments.
Organic pigments make up a market segment that gains
more importance each day, especially for the paint indus-
try, especially because they represent very flexible alterna-
tives both technically and commercially. Producers of this
kind of pigment have focused their efforts on the develop-
ment of existing pigments or even improvements in their
manufacturing processes. “The main challenge lies in suc-
cessfully replacing heavy metal-based pigments with inor-
ganic ones at the lowest costs possible. To that end, matte
pigments alone will not suffice. Known how to do it and
which pigment should b used is as important as providing
matte pigments,” ponders Milton Yoshio Uehara, pigments
coordinator for Clariant’s Coatings business.
As the paint industry’s operations and capabilities expand,
so does the use of high-performance pigments as part of
the restless search for improved weatherability, heat resis-
tance and quality. These products have displayed positive
performance in the paint market. “Brazil’s organic pig-
ment market has been growing rapidly and now represents
around 80 percent of all pigments imported by Brazil,
excluding titanium dioxide and carbon blacks. In addi-
tion, we notice that the need for non-toxic products for
the most varied of applications has increased over the past
few years, as colors have been a part of our day-to-day
lives. Controlling or eliminating heavy metals in organic
pigments is essential for us to increasingly expand the
