growth of 5 percent,” says Marcia Rios, Industrial Application manager for Latin
America at Clariant’s ICS business unit.
The toughest challenge facing biocide producers is to develop solutions that combine
sustainable performance with low costs. “The companies concerned, especially the
multinational ones, signed a sustainability policy in 2013 whereby they are seeking
biocides that are not only less toxic, but also less damaging to the environment and
human health. However, those products are usuallymore costly,” says Brenda Rangel,
sales director for Latin America at Dow Microbial Control.
Another important factor that has been adding to this concern refers to the increased
awareness among end users of the importance of using loss toxic material that meet
the hazard and emission control standards applicable to their products, which are now
protected frommicrobiological wear bymicrobiocides. “As awareness rise among end
consumers, it exerts a lot of influence on the development of the biocide market in
Brazil, where users demand more and more protection and warranty of longer shelf
lives,” says Ipel’s marketing director Luiz Wilson Pereira Leite.
Steel Containers and IBCs - Up to Quality and Safety Standards
Brazilian industrial packaging industry on the rise thanks to versatility, safety, qual-
ity and sustainability
Steel containers and IBCs have been gaining more and more ground in the paint
market for both water and solvent-based formulations. Safety is essential, and
there is no doubt about it in this kind of packaging material. For this reason, these
products need and are required to be certified by Inmetro (short in Brazil for Na-
tional Institute of Metrology), as most of the substances they carry are considered
flammable and hazardous, and the institute will test and ensure that it is safe to use
them in all of the processes involved, including transportation.
They are very popular packaging materials for industrial applications due to the
complex life cycle issues that are involved. “The paint and coatings industry is a
very promising market for steel containers and IBCs because it seeks optimal per-
formance, especially as regards the safety of both the packaged product and the
environment. In addition, since chemicals are involved, we are that more concerned
about quality and safety, while the industry, for its part, requires stainless steel and
plastic containers to be certified by Inmetro under Resolution no. 420/04 of the
ANTT (Federal Ground Transportation Agency),” says Fabio Henrique Kusumoto,
of Tamborline’s sales department.
Environmental concerns are also present in every step of the manufacturing process
and the transportation of industrial containers, as well as the appropriate treatment
and disposal of solid and liquid waste. Some companies provide customers will all
types of services involved, up to the entire cycle, while others which don’t provide
this kind of support make a point of giving customers complete instructions to
prevent any possible contamination in the environment.
