BeginningthismonthofJune isoneofthemostawaited
events inthepastfewyears, theWorldCup,whichbrings
along awhirl of expectations for bothduring and after
the event, especially concerning the performance our
economy for this year. Thedata available todate show
some advance in the first quarter, when the Brazilian
economy grew 0.2 percent over the previous three
months. Thegrossdomesticproduct (GDP), for itspart,
increased by 1.9 percent compared to the same period
of 2013. Nevertheless, theestimates fromanalystswho
had forecast near-zeroGDPgrowth for theperiodhave
indeedbeenconfirmed.
Unfortunately,accordingtodatafromthe IBGE(Brazilian
InstituteofGeographyandStatistics),while investments
shouldbeat relativelyhigher levels, theyactually fell 2.1
percentcomparedtothepreviousquarterduetoseveral
factors, such as a decrease in imports of capital goods,
and a fall in the domestic production of capital goods,
aswell as inbuildingand construction, especially in the
field of infrastructure, which includes construction of
highwaysandgenerationofpower, for example.
According to the Central Bank’s latest announcement,
economistsexpecttheeconomytogrowby1.63percent
thisyear.MinisterofFinanceGuidoMantega,ontheother
hand, anticipatesagrowth rateof 2.3 to2.5percent.

results this year thanks to theWorldCup.With the construc-
