Interview -SolvayBelieves inBrazil’sPotential
TheSolvayGroup ismaking investments inthemainmarketsthat it
serves inBrazilandgettingreadyto introducenewproducts inthe
paintandcoatings industryduringABRAFATI2015,tobeheldfrom
October 13 to 15 inSãoPaulo.All of thecompany’snewdevelop-
mentshavebeenrevealedbySolvayCoatisCEOJoséBorgesMatias,
agraduate from Instituto TecnológicodaAeronáutica (ITA) and
theUniversityofSãoPaulo (USP).HestartedhiscareeratRhodia
in1983.Heheldseveralpositionsatthecompany’sproductionand
investmentmanagement groups inBrazil and Franceuntil 1991,
whenhestartedworkingonmarketingandsalesforthepolyester
andpolyamidebusinesses.
In2002Matiaswasappointedvicepresidentofprocurementand
salesinLatinAmerica.In2006,hetookoverasvicepresidentofsup-
plies,energyandgovernmentalrelationsatRhodiaLatinAmerica.In
2008,hebecameglobalvicepresidentofprocurement.
With theSolvayGroup’sacquisitionofRhodia inSeptember 2011,
Matiaswas confirmed inhis position as global vicepresident of
procurementandsupplychain,responsibleformanagingpurchases

The 21st Paint&PinturaCoatings Technology andManagement
Forum,organizedbyAgneloEditora, istakingplaceonAugust13at
theCriciúmaBusinessAssociation (known forshort inPortuguese
asACIC) inCriciúma,SantaCatarina,whichhasbecomeoneofthe
mainnetworking locationsforthecoatings industry.
Held in thecity for thesecond time, the forum reliesonexclusive

coordinator of the Study Commission (CE-10:101.05) of the
BrazilianChemistryCommittee (CB-10/ABNT), coordinatorof
theToxicologicalSciencesgraduatecourse,andprofessorof
ToxicologyatFaculdadesOswaldoCruz,SãoPaulo.
ThelecturewillexplaintheGHS(GloballyHarmonizedSystem
ofClassificationandLabelingofChemicals),whichhasbeen
establishedandpublishedbytheUnitedNations(UN).InBrazil,
theGHShasbeen incorporated intoRegulatoryStandard26
(NR26),of theMinistryofLaborandEmployment,andNBR
14725, of theBrazilianAssociation for Technical Standards
(ABNT). Basedon legal requirements and considering the
effectivenessof theGHS inBrazil, the lecturewilldiscussthe
impactsandnecessaryadjustments that thesystem isgoing
tobring intotheBrazilian industry.
Biocides -MultipurposeProducts
Amajorchallengefacingbiocidesmanufacturersistodevelop
products featuring less toxicity, lowVOCemissions andno
harm tohumanhealthor theenvironment. The latest inno-
vations frombiocidesuppliershavesought toaddress these
global requirementswith alternativeproducts. “Themost
important innovation,whichhasbeenaroundforafewyears
now,isthegrowingincorporationoforganicornaturalcompo-
nentsintoformulationstoreduceVOCemissionsandeliminate
high-risksubstancesfromthem.Wealsohavetobeattentive
toeachrequirementandtrendineachmarket,especiallyinour
workwithcustomersabroad.Whatwenoticeasthatthe list
ofmoleculesthatareeitherprohibitedordosage-restricted in
themostvariedofcountrieshasbeengrowingbytheday.This
trendforcesustoseekotheractive ingredientsthatwillmeet
the requirements in thosemarkets,”says Ipel’s international
marketingandbusinessdirectorLuizWilsonPereiraLeite.
Thebiocidemarkethasevolvedalotoverthepastseveralyears,
asgrowing restrictionson theuseof certainmolecules, the
banonothersandthedifficultydevelopingnewbiocidalactive
ingredientspushmanufacturerstobecreativeandshowtheir
potential fornewdevelopments, according toLonza’s sales
managerforBrazilAlessandroMachado.“Ourcompanyuses
advanced technology and innovation, combinedwithdeep
understandingofthe interactionsbetweenformulationsand
theirbiocides,tofindthesynergeticassociationsofregulated
molecules, with appropriate toxicological profiles and low
dosagetheirapplication.”
