formulations. “However, itsprimary role is tomakean
oil system compatible inwater, which iswhy it ismore
used inwater-based formulations.”
Emulsifiersplayakey role in theproductionofpolymer
dispersions, while exerting substantial influence on
the performance properties of the end formulation,
according to Additiva’s marketing coordinator Adria-
na Fischer. “From among the new developments and
breakthroughs in this market, we see a strong trend
towardsusingAPEO-free surfactants toproduce styre-
ne acrylic resins that are used in certain specific and
thrivingmarkets.”
Surfactants are and will continue to be an essential
part in paint formulations in the future, according to
HugoGardelli, headofOxiteno’sPaints&Coatingsbu-
siness. “Oneof the factors that isgoing to significantly
influence thismarket is the replacementofalkylphenol
ethoxylate-basedsurfactants.Largecompanieshaveal-
readystartedmoving inthatdirection,andthepressure
for replacing those isgoing to increasemoreandmore
in the next few years, whether that pressure comes
from themarket itself or from regulating agencies, or
even from technical standards like the GHS (Globally
Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of
Chemicals). Technically speaking, by the way, viable

POLYURETHANERESINS - STRONGER COATINGS
Themarket for polyurethane resins has beenmaking great
strides,especiallyas regardsmoresustainabletechnologies.

Highly important ingredients inpaintsandcoatings,polyure-
thane resinsenable the formulationofchemicallyandphysi-
callystronger coatings. “Mechanical andchemical strength,
highsurfacehardnessandhighweatheringresistancearethe
properties you can get from this type of resin. In addition,
this product is evenbetter suited for applications requiring
abrasion resistance, good adhesion, water and solvent re-
sistance, hardness and flexibility. In that regard, industrial
coatings andflooringvarnishes featuringhigh resistance to
traffic, forexample, demand this technology,” saysLubrizol
accountmanagerReinaldoSampaio.
Polyurethane resins can also be said to be rather versatile,
as by changing the compositionout of amyriadof existing
polyols and isocyanates, you canproduce formulations fea-
turingdifferentphysical andchemical properties, according
