amount inasolution. Solventsareused inmanykindsof
paints for various applications. Evenwaterbornepaints
usesolvents intheirformulation,”saysAromattechnical
manager FernandoRosa, adding that themain factor in
selectingasolventshouldbe itssolubility in themedium
intowhich it istobeapplied, followedbytheevaporation
rangeandthenbythepropertiesexpectedfromthepaint
tobe formulated, such as viscosity, rheology, odor and
drying times, amongothers.
Hydrocarbon solvents are excellent at solubilizing na-
tural resins andmodified natural resins, as in the case
of varnishes, alkyd resins, rosin and petroleum resins,
according to Paulo Ricardo Rachel de Avelar, chemical
manager for coatings, adhesives and rubber goods
at Petrobras Distribuidora. “The low specific mass of
these products is also important in some applications,
suchas thinner formulation,where theydeliver greater
volumetricyieldsperproductmassunit. These solvents
also featureonlya slightodor compared tooxygenated
solvents,forexample. Inturpentine,aliphaticsolventsare
themost commonlyusedworldwide. Theyareoften re-
tailed intheirpure formandusedasthinners fordilution
or cleaning indecorativepaint andvarnishapplications.
Turpentinecombinesmoderatesolvencywitharelatively
slowevaporationrate,whichallowsforgood levelingand
stabilityof thecoating layer.”
AvelarsaysthatthearomaticsolventsfromPetrobrasare
produced from catalytic reformingof naphtha streams.
“The properties that set those solvents apart include
greatersolventpower,whichallowsthemtobereferred
toas true solvents, andahigher specificmass than that
of aliphatic solvents. Toluene is apure chemical solvent
type (methyl benzene). It’s a fast-evaporating solvent
used inproducts like lacquers,spraypaints,thinnersanda
varietyof industrialcoatings.Xylene, for itspart,consists
of isomermixture(ortho,metaandparaxylene,aswellas
ethylbenzene),hasamoderateevaporationrateanduse
usedespecially in industrialandautomotivecoatings. It’s
important tonote that thecompositionofxylenevaries
accordingto itssource.ThexylenemarketedbyPetrobras
Distribuidora isproducedatthePresidenteBernardesRefinery,
inCubatão, SãoPaulo, andhas a low ethylbenzene content,
which is themost toxiccomponent.”
With several kinds of hydrocarbon solvents available, ma-
nufacturers seek alternatives to more aggressive and less
sustainableproductsthat, inaddition, featuregoodsolubility,
stabilityandcompatibilitywith thevarious resins inuse in the
marketplace, aswell as lowodor emission, according toCar-

“Thatway,wecanachieveagoodevaporationforfilmforma-
tion,thisenhancingthepropertiesofthepaintbeingapplied.”
