Used in a broad range of applications, monomers enhance
paintsespeciallybydeliveringsuchpropertiesasgoodadhe-
sion,highchemicalstrength,flexibilityandlowviscosity,while
beingperfectlyfitforuse in low-VOCproducts.
Themarket formonomers inBrazil hasexperienced reason-
ablegrowth in2016.Eventhoughmanyuncertaintiesremain,
there is anoverall impression that theBrazilian economy is
abouttograduallybounceback.“Inparticular,thetwoacrylic
monomersproducedattheBASFAcrylicComplexinCamaçari,
Bahia,orbutylacrylateandacrylicacid,havebeendoingmuch
betterthanweexpected.Werealizeourcustomersaremak-
inggooduseof theseproducts. Inaddition, our2-ethylhexyl
acrylate,whichwe’ve recentlybegun toproduceatournew
plantinGuaratinguetá,SãoPaulo,hasperformedaccordingto
ourexpectationsin2016.Weexpecttocontinueseeinggrowth
opportunitiesinBrazilandallofSouthAmericagoingforward.
Sincetheregionstilldisplaysarelatively lowpercapitauseof
acrylates, thedemand from industries likearchitectural coat-
ings,woodcoatings,watertreatment,enhancedoilrecovery,
adhesivesandtextiletreatmenthasbeenprogressivelygrow-
ing,” saysAlexander Traut, petrochemicals director at BASF
forSouthAmerica.
AccordingtoAdrianaVeríssimo,productstewardforEvonik’s
rangeofacrylicmonomers, it isquiteadevelopedandprom-
isingmarket, as itshowgreatpotential forgrowth invarious
industry segments, including paints and coatings. “Manu-
facturers in this industry are very dynamic businesseswho
activelyseeknewtechnologiesandsolutionsthatwillimprove
productivity,qualityandsustainability -allattainablebyusing
monomers.”
Monomers featuring high strength properties and low vis-
cosity, combinedwith flexibility and good adhesion, are in
increasinglyhighdemandinBrazil.“Currently,we’reseeingthat
monomerscanrepresentasmuchas80percentoftheformula-
tionvolume inseveralapplications,ceasingonceandforallto
beviewedasmere‘solvents’designedonlytoreduceviscosity
andenhancephysicalandchemicalproperties.Wehavemore
andmoremonomerswithuniquepropertiescoveringabroad
applicationspectrum,from improvingadditivelevels(wetting
andslipagents)to impartingoutstandingadhesiontoseveral
kindsofsubstratesandapplications,”saysQuiminutri’sdevelopment

DEFOAMERS - ENHANCED PERFORMANCE, EFFICIENCY AND
GREATVALUEFORMONEY
The defoamermarket inBrazil has technically evolved especially
in termsof sustainability, as companies seek todevelopproducts
featuring enhanced performancewhilemeeting environmental
requirementsandprovidinggreatervalueformoney.
“In thepast, the technologymost commonly inusewasmineral
oil-baseddefoamers.Inresponsetothecoatings industry’srequire-
ments, defoamers have chemically evolved, and todaywe have
products basedon vegetableoils, polysiloxanes, emulsifiedpoly-
mersandhigh-performancepolymers.Defoamerconsumptionhas
alsobeen increasing inBrazil,especiallydue to thegrowinguseof
water-basedtechnology indecorative, industrial,automotiveOEM
andrefinishcoatings,”saysMarlonBraidott,technicalconsultantat
BASF’sAdditivesbusinessforSouthAmerica.
Thedemandfordefoamershasgrownatthesamepaceasthetech-
nical challenges related to foam formation, insofaras theshareof
waterborneformulations inthe industry’sproductionvolumeshas
beenrisingoverthepastfewyears,accordingtoCleitonPaulinoda
Silva, technical salesperson at Buntech/Münzing. “The reformula-
tionofresins(emulsions) forusingAPE-freeemulsifiershasplayed
apart in increasingthedemandfordefoamersand/ortheneedfor
total replacement thereof. Coatings featuring increasingly higher
applicationspeeds,particularlyforindustrialapplications,havecalled
formoreeffectiveandmorepersistentdefoamers.”
When it comes to performance, the Brazilianmarket has been
welcoming the innovations indefoamers. Previously, the industry
would only use traditional mineral oil-based products in Brazil.

AmericaatElementisSpecialties,saysthatmoremoderndefoamers
featuringgreateraddedvalueandimprovedperformancegradually
gainedgroundovertheyears.“Environmentallycompliantproducts
basedonoilsfromrenewablesourcesareagoodexample.Superior
performanceproductsbasedonfunctionalpolymers,polysiloxanes
andcustomizedblendsarealreadyturningup inourmarketwitha
certain frequencyaswell. Ibelieve that theevolutionwesee from
traditionaldefoamers,aswellasthegrowingmarketshareofmore
modern, efficient and performance-focused products based on
greenchemistry, tendstogainmoretractionassoonasthecrisis is
behindusandeconomicgrowth isresumed.”
