In spite of the bleak picture in Brazil, we still expect our business to grow slightly faster than the GDP.” Another powerful trend is the demand for products that deliver high performance at low costs, according to BYK technical consultant EmersonMóri Simões. “We’ve been hard at work on this concept and developing products that do combine high performance and lowcost. Having displayed gradual growth in recent years, manufacturers of colorants for tinting systems seek more and more to demonstrate the many benefits of using those systems. Chromaflo is one of those companies which has been working on advertising its tinting systems and their advantages over time. “As a result, I realize paint manufacturers have been learning that tinting systems are amajor tool of promoting their brands andboosting sales in the process. Although we do have data showing growth in the market for tinting systemcolorants, we still have a longway to go as far as changing the conservative profile of consumers in their choice of colors,” says national sales manager Gisele Ferreira. Gisele adds that Chromaflo expects its 2017 growth rate to repeat that of last year. “In the protective andautomotive refinish coatings segments, we can see a cultural change taking place, where manufacturers are giving up producing concentrates, and buying dispersed pigments fromChromaflo instead.” ForClariant’ssalestechnicianNivoBuraiJunior,thecolorantmarkethasbeengrowingincre- asingly fast due to theongoingmigration fromready-mix colors to those formulated at the point of sale. “Benefits from this migration include reduced inventories for our customers aswell as increased product turnover, which in turn avoids problemswith expiration dates and ensures more consistent quality levels. We also attribute some of the growth we’re experiencing in our market to a high supply of a great diversity of colors, which has greatly influenced the market toward that migration. We understand that a major trend for the future is for us to have colors available from POS tinting systems alone, while consumers becomemore andmore demandingbasedonproduct safety and sustainability concerns.” Sintequímica sales directorMarceloAmaral Leite deMacedobelieves that themarket for tinting systems in Brazil is still quite small compared to what it is internationally because the difference in cost here between the conventional system and a tinting system is still too big. “The end consumer winds up opting for a paint in that ‘in-plant’ formulated co- lor that comes closest to that they’d pick out from color fan for the tinting system. Our mission is to develop our system with a view to democratizing it, so that the colorants available on market can finally be used at the same cost levels as the pigments provided for in-plant paint formulation. Once we get that going, we expect the demand for this system to finally take off.”
