Given the enormous importance the paint and coatings market has gained in those regions over the past fewdecades, as well as the number ofmanufacturerswho are doing business and standing out in the industry, Agnelo Editora has been turned on to that dynamism, created the Paint & Pintura Regional Awards, and decided that the first edition should focus on the companies and professionals that have shown the most dedication to that local market. Presenting awards for 21 categories, plus the special award for Contribution to the Industry, the event is a regional version of the Paint&PinturaAwards, recognizedasthe“Oscars”ofthecoatings industry, whichwas created by Agnelo Editora to honor suppliers of rawmaterials andprofessionals thatmost contributedover the yeartosustainabledevelopmentinthepaintandcoatingsindustry, as well as the best paint companies. INORGANIC PIGMENTS - IMPARTINGCOLORANDSTRENGTH TO COATINGS Innovationsininorganicpigmentsdeliverfullercolorationandhigh performance, all with a zero heavy-metal content. For the most part, inorganic pigments feature certain physical and chemical properties that are key to the coatings supply chain. Examples include great hidingpower, high lightfastness andwea- therability, andgoodresistancetoacids, alkalisandsolvents, which iswhy theywill alwaysbeappreciatedand indemand in this indus- try, according to Givanildo Ferreira, executivemanager of Sales & MarketingatLanxess’InorganicPigmentsGroup(IPG).“It’sworth pointingoutthatcustomershavedisplayedanirreversiblygrowing demand for sustainableproducts andmanufacturers.Whatwe’re seeing in China is that the enforcement of strict environmental regulations has been gaining momentum and influencing the production capacity for several raw materials used in the paint and coatings industry - including inorganic pigments - which have beeneitherreducedorwipedoutasaresult, andthatbringsabout positive mid-term prospects for investment in the industry, in a process that can also be accelerated by an economic upswing.” Sergio Rubio, technical coordinator at quantiQ, says that despite the current trend towards promoting “green” or “eco-friendly” products, the fact remains that there has yet to be a clear and ac- curatedefinitionofwhatmakesaproductfitthatdescription. “DCC, one of the companieswe represent, which is based in Canadaandhasbeensupplyingthemarketwithpigmentsfor morethan70years,iscompletelycommittedtobestpractices inboth the production anddistributionof its products. That’s thecasewith ironoxide and bismuth vanadate pigments, and our company sells the latter.Accordingly, webelieveinorganicpigmentsareaviable alternative tomeet the growing environmental andoccupa- tionalsafetyrequirementsinthemarketplaceand, asaresult, that we’ll be seeing continuous growth in consumption of those pigments over the next several years.” Rubioalsopointsoutthatinorganicpigmentsusuallycombine strength, durability, good dispersibility and good hiding po- werintoonepackage.“Whenitcomestobismuthvanadate, we can say that, in addition to those properties, one of the products we supply features pure, high-saturation colors. Customershavebeenincreasinglystringentaboutqualityand performance, which we believe makes our product ideally positioned for growth.” ADHESION PROMOTERS - EXCITING PROSPECTS Suppliers of adhesionpromoters are rather optimistic about growth and the demand for their products over the next few years. Adhesion promoters are in increasingly high demand in Brazil’s paint and coatings industry. This is because these chemicals increase adhesive strength between the coating and the substrate, and that reflects in benefits like not only improved adhesion, but also greater corrosion resistance, according to Luis Carthery, Lubrizol’s Performance Coatings Group business manager for Latin America. “Our range of additives provides other benefits as well, such as metallic pigment pacification and metal surface pre-treatment. The demand and the interest in obtaining these benefits are alwayshigh, astheyhelpcustomersdifferentiatethemselves in themarketplace.” As one of the largest global players in the coatings industry, Eastmanhasnoticedthemarketforadhesionpromotershas been getting stronger, according to Marcos Basso, market developmentmanagerforLatinAmericaatTheEastmanChe- mical Company. “As wewatch existing trends, we conclude that there are prospects for annual growth at a compound rateof 6percent until 2021. This increase ismostly attributed to thegrowth theautomotive industry is experiencing in the Asia-Pacific region. Together, countries like China, Japan, IndiaandSouthKoreaconsumemore than75percent of the demand in the region. There’s an increased demand in the plastic, compositeandpackaging industries aswell.
