CLIPPING Born and raised in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Lazzuri began his career working with his dad, who owned a grocery store back in the day. “When I turned 18 years old, I got my first driver’s license and startedworking as a professional truck driver at my father’s business establishment. In 1957 I got my degree in chemistry andwas staunchly encouraged, especially by my mom, to get a job in that field. And it was around that time that I saw an ad from the chemical company Resana In- dústria Química, which was hiring an intern, so I immediately applied for the job. Once I got it, I began to work at technical support laboratory of Resana, which was a producer of indus- trial resins, including for the paint and coatings industry. And so it was that, in 1958, I learned tomake resins and startedmy trajectory in the coatings market, which became a passion of mine,” Lazzuri tells. At that time, as fate would have it, Lazzuri would go to work near a car factory, and that, combinedwith his great, blooming skill, sparked up in him an interest in producing automotive coatings. And the rest is history. For more, see the full article in the Portuguese version. CHEMISTRY OF THE FUTURE ON THE AGENDA The 17th Responsible Care Congress, held by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (known for short in Portugue- se as Abiquim), had a record turnout of 650 attendees representing governments, international institutions, regulatory agencies, associations, NGOs, and business people employed by the chemical industry, as well as by logistics companies. Themed “The Chemistry of the Future: A Universe of Possibilities and Challenges,” the Congress took place on August 15 and 16 at Novotel Center Norte, in the state capi- tal of SãoPaulo, Brazil, where people packed the rooms to discuss such important topics as the regulatory framework for safe management of chemical substances, emissions control and contributions fromchemistry toair quality, the interaction of chemical producers with communities and society, diversity, and safe storage for chemicals. In his speech for the opening ceremony, chairman of the Abiquim board Marcos De Marchi pointed out that the association has set itself the goal of engaging more companies inmaking the case for adhering to the Respon- sible Care Program. “This congress is addressing topics that impact the manufacturing sector, while celebrating the chemical industry’s commitment to continuous im- provement in our processes and products alike, which leads to greater safety for both our employees and our neighboring communities,” De Marchi explained.
