November 14th, 1983 saw WEG get into the paint and coatings business by acquiring the paint company Tin- tas Michigan and set up the chemical company WEG Química in the town of Guaramirim, Santa Catarina. Tintas Michigan had a decorative paint plant and a small industrial coatings operation whose main customer was WEG Motores, which it supplied with an iron oxide red synthetic enamel coating. Theweek after that acquisition, the newly established companyWEGQuímica shut down its decorative paint production and channeled all efforts and investments into the industrial coatings business. “The company started out with 25 employees and has expanded as a supplier with the support of sales repre- sentatives of the electrical packagewhowould introduce WEGQuímica as aWEGGroup company and showcase its products in the marketplace.
