EVENTS - SÃO PAULO HOSTS PRESENTATION OF ABRAFATI COATINGS SCIENCE AWARDS December 4, 2018 saw the Brazilian Coatings Manufacturers Association, known for short as ABRAFATI, hold its traditional year-end dinner party, which includes presenting the trophies to the winners of the 19th edition of the ABRAFATI Coatings Sci- ence Awards, at Clube Atlético Monte Líbano, in the São Paulo state capital. For his opening speech, ABRAFATI executive president Antonio Carlos de Oliveira talked about the importance of strengthening ties across the coatings supply chain, which he views as essential for making the paint and coatings industry consistently stronger, more innovative and more sustainable. “As I mention this, I’m deliberately highlighting one of the aspects that we think is instrumental to achieving what we want, which is good relation- ships, interaction and cooperation among the various players across our supply chain. This is the meaning of the socialization we seek to foster with this dinner party and all other events that we hold,” Oliveira points out. In the same evening, Freddy Carrillo, chairman of ABRAFATI’s board of directors, discussed situation of the paint and coatings industry in 2018 and the challenges facing it, as well as positive expectations, for the year 2019. He also thanked representatives of the industry and their suppliers who play key roles in the in- dustry for being there. “To us, 2018 was a challenging year. We entered the year expecting a GDP growth rate around 3 percent, and our industry to growth by as much as one percentage point more than the GDP. As Brazil saw reality set it, its GDP growth wasmuch slower than our expectation, or just about 1.32 percent, and our business should display a growth rate about the level as that of the GDP,” Carrillo explains. As dinner played out, the new trophy for the ABRAFATI awards was introduced. Designed by visual artist Francisca Junqueira, one trophy was presented to each of the three winners of the 19th ABRAFATI Coatings Science Awards.
