The event will be kicked offby Banco doNordeste, which will be bringing a lecture titled “Microeconomic Scenario and Investment Opportunities in theNortheast.”Delivering the lec- turewill be the economist Airton Saboya, who holds a doctor’s degree in local and territorial development and is the head of the Microeconomic Study and Research Cell of the ETENE (Technical Office for Economic Studies in the Northeast), part of the Economic Studies department of Banco do Nordeste. Up next is a presentation by Francisco Rácz, founding partner at consultancy firm Rácz, Yamaga & Consultores Associados, with 40 years’ experience in all paint, coatings and related segments in Latin America, whose lecture is titled “Coatings EVENTS FIRE UP THE INDUSTRY The 2019 scenario remains favorable as regards the economy and growth across the manufacturing sector. Financial ma- rket analysts expect Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) to grow at a rate of 2.48 percent for the year, according to the Focus report, which is based on a survey conducted with more than 100 financial institutions. For 2020, people in the financial market expect the rate of economic growth to jump up to 2.58 percent. The forecast for the 2021 and 2022 is 2.50 percent. Also optimistic are the expectations for the paint and coatings industry. The featured articles in this issue, on titaniumdioxide, alkyd resins, and production equipment—mills, dispensers andmixers—all showmanufacturers and distributors describe their prospects along the same lines, expecting to see gradual growth, albeit moderately. Companies continue to be hard at work ushering in new developments that provide more value for money while being increasingly sustainable, as well as making investments to further boost that economic upturn. Our industry is also entering the year 2019 amid honors and recognition in regions of great relevance that are on a path of growth and evolution. March has come, and with it come winners of the 2nd Paint & Pintura Regional Awards, North & Northeast, which is taking place on March 15 at Arcádia Recepções, in Recife, Pernambuco. The award presentation is divided into 22 categories, including suppliers of rawmaterials, paint companies, and personalities who really stood out in the coatings industry over the course of 2018. Be sure to check out in this issue who are the winners of the industry’s “Oscar” for the Brazilian North and Northeast. Just before the award ceremony, on the 14th and 15th, the 40th Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology and Management Forum and Exhibition in the Northeast Region is happening at Radisson Recife, also in its namesake city of Recife, Per- nambuco. The event marks the first time that panels with the technical leadership and CEOs of the industry are held in the region, adding to the technical lectures presented by major suppliers to the coatings industry, whichwill also have a space set aside for exhibition. Also happening in themonth of March is the European Coatings Show 2019, from the 19th to the 20th, in Nuremberg, Germany. The international coatings industry’s display of innovations will extend to eight halls for the first time, also featuring the European Coatings ShowConference, which will bring together prominent experts in the realms of science and economics onMarch 18 and 19. The Conference is going to givemarket players an opportunity to learn about the latest research results and findings from some of the world’s largest research and development departments. In a nutshell, we are entering 2019 with lots of news and at a point of evolution fromwhich there is no turning back, aswe’re in a market in an ongoing development process. The second day begins with the lecture “Managing Innovation in Brazil’s Coatings Industry,” to be delivered by Washington Yamaga, who is also a founding partner at Rácz, Yamaga & Consultores Associados, as well as a board member at a number of companies in the chemical industry. Yamaga is an expert in marketing, sales and technology for the coatings, chemical and auto industries, as well as industrial effluents, with extensive experience as chief executive at a number of multinationals, including DuPont, AkzoNobel and PPG, as well as other companies in South America. Later on that same day comes the “Panel of Technical Le- aders,” featuring paint industry technology directors and
