CLIPPING 8 | PAINT&PINTURA | Maio 2019 The demand for silicas has increased considerably over the past few years in the Brazilian market because the provide coatings with key properties other minerals do not, from morphological aspects to certain physical and chemical properties, especially from perlite and diatomite, according to Alexandre Lucato, manager of R&D and innovation for Imerys’ Performance Minerals business. “Significant performance deliverables are observed, such as yields, enhanced mechanical strength and matting power. In addition, silica products are usually considered for correcting the angle of gloss incidence (sheen 85°), for touchability on coating films for industrial applications or even to add some mechanical strength,” he concludes. PLASTIC PACKAGING MATERIALS - TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION CONTRIBUTE TO RISE IN CONSUMPTION The growth in use of plastic pails in the paint industry has been incre- asing each year, and the drivers of that growth include innovation, design and quality, as well as the safety and especially the great cost-benefit ratios that these containers provide. This growing con- sumption of plastic pails by the paint and coatings industry in Brazil has been gradual and kept pace with the trend in more developed countries. “Investments in state-of-the-art technologies, molds and machinery have yield containers that are versatile in terms of shapes, a highlight of which being rectangular pails, as well as in color and in label and lid printing systems,” says Bomix sales director Alexandre Rosário. “In addition, these are sturdy and safe containers, which begets trust and user preference, not only in the building and cons- truction industry, but also among end consumers,” he points out. Paulo EduardoBernardes Silva, regional salesmanager at Fibrasa, says the use of plastic packaging materials continues to grow consisten- tly. “Part of this growth is attributable to paint companies replacing metal cans with plastic pails. Today, any ordinary consumer can see that. All it takes is going to a home improvement center, and you will find a huge number of different options in plastic pails available for paint companies to sell their products in. There are themost varied of instances of that among paint and coatings companies, ranging from thosewhich have incorporated plastic pails into some of their product lines to businesses that have just drop steel cans altogether and are now packing 100 percent of their portfolios in plastic pails,” he tells. Lately, the domestic marketplace has seen some restructuring and started taking the first steps towards replicating what goes on in the international market, where there’s been a shift in paradigm in favor of plastic packaging materials for the paint and coatings industry, according to Metal G sales manager Pericles Lima. “Major market players already have products launching in this kind of container. Some of the appeals of these packaging materials are the fact that they are recyclable and can be used for a number of other purposes after their contents finish, keeping that brand around for a long time. Plastic packaging also benefits from the trend towards more and more products beingwater-based formulations. Always respectful of the environment, plastic containers complete the ‘environmentally correct’ cycle.” PAINT & PINTURA FORUM - PAINT & PINTURA FORUM JOINVILLE HOT SPOT FOR INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS IN THE SOUTH The 41st Paint &Pintura Coatings Technology andManagement Forum in the South Region took place on April 11, with a full-day program at Bourbon Joinville Business Hotel, in downtown Joinville, Santa Catarina (Brazil).
