A phenomenon that is not limited to Brazil, economic growth has slowed down around the world in 2019. Nevertheless, we must not dwell on it. Times like this call for investment, innovative products and the ability to meet market requirements. This is what is going on in the paint and coatings industry, which never stops and is always seeking to add value to the entire supply chain. In this month’s issue, Paint & Pintura Magazine features an ex- clusive interview with AkzoNobel’s president for South America Daniel Geiger Campos, who says Brazil is one the company’s top-five market and one of the countries where it has the larg- est footprint. To exemplify how AkzoNobel eagerly invests and won’t stop moving to bring innovations to Brazil, Campos tells as that it has accelerated its pace of innovation focusing on premium paints. He adds that the chief challenge in the Brazilian market is not to increase paint consumption, but to see to it that better quality paints are chosen. This is why AkzoNobel is constantly investing high-performance, water-based products. The latest line launch- ing from the company is Decora, which is being introduced at CasaCor 2019. The July issue also brings you our firsthand coverage of the 42nd Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology and Management Forum in the Southeast Region, which took place on June 6 in Vitória, Espirito Santo. The program for the forum comprised a varied schedule of lectures that introduced much innovation in the area, with presentations by companies like Eastman, Bomix and Covestro. Additionally, there were two panels, one featuring leaders in the paint and coatings industry, who discussed paths for the industry, management challenges and new business op- portunities for the next decade, and one was conducted with some of the industry’s technical leaders, who addressed the theme “NewDevelopments, Innovations and Trends in Products and Applications.” The Paint & Pintura Forums have had quite a draw in various regional markets in Brazil, while being a way of helping to spread the latest of innovations launching from key suppliers to the industry. Three more editions are scheduled for this year in the host cities of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul; Curitiba, Paraná; and Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. As for the featured articles in this issue, we bring you the news on mineral additives and coalescing agents. On the mineral additive front, it is impressive how these rawmaterials have evolved over the past several years, going all the way frommeremineral fillers to an indispensable component in paint formulations, with awide variety of performance products. Coalescing agents, for their part, stand out for new technologies designed to meet sustainability requirements and for their multiple functionalities. A global paint and coatings company, AkzoNobel makes massive investments in innovation, as well as improving and expanding its existing lines. During an exclusive interview with Paint & Pintura Magazine, Daniel Geiger Campos, president of AkzoNobel for South America, talks about the company’s latest launches. Mr. Campos also stresses the importance of the Brazilian market for AkzoNobel, the challenges facing the coatings industry, the main investments being made by the company, and those that are in the pipeline. In addition, he unveils the key guidelines he has set for the company in the region since he took over in 2016 as president of Decorative Paints, which, as a result of a restructuring process AkzoNobel has gone through, was followed last year by him assuming the presidency of AkzoNobel for South America. Campos has a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA). He joined P&G’s marketing team after college, and remained at that company for 19 years, having worked in a number of its many business areas. His busi- ness baggage also includes time spent in the United States, Mexico and Peru - in the latter, he served as general manager for four years. He returned to Brazil in 2013 to lead Natura’s global personal care business. On January 1st, 2016, he took the helm at Tintas Coral, Sparlack and Hammerite, in Brazil, and Alba and Inca, in Argentina and Uruguay, respectively. COALESCING AGENTS - EVOLUTION TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY The coalescing agents business displays consistent evolution, especially as new products and technologies are developed with sustainability and the environment in mind.
