this scenario, Fernando Bezerra
Coelho, who left the office of
Secretary of Economic Develop-
ment for the Pernambuco state
government and was installed
as Minister of National Integra-
tion, advocates that the Nor-
theast region needs to become
a national project. According to
him, the problems of the re-
gion need to be viewed as part
of the solution to the country’s
development, including by the
Northeastern people themsel-
ves. Coelho said that he is going
to talk to the governors of the
Northeastern and other states
of Brazil in order to establish
the role that the region can
play. He took over the ministry
planning to take the infras-
tructure speech up to the forum
to be held by Sudene (short for
Northeast Development Supe-
rintendence) and utilize the
knowledge gained by his office
in managing major construc-
tion works, such as the diver-
sion of the São Francisco river
and the implementation of the
Trans-Northeast railways. The
minister also intends to turn
Sudene into a forum for setting
the infrastructural investment
priorities for the Northeast.
