the entire market with the necessary support, and
we succeeded in structuring our business accordin-
gly. In fact, we are now in a new structure that we’d
been building for a while and to which we migrated
earlier this year. We feel the need to expand our space
and show the market that we take our business very
seriously, which includes making investments in fur-
ther improvements for the benefit of our customers
and partners,” says Castillo, adding that Brisco’s new
plant covers a total area of 8,000 square meters.
Industry in the Spotlight - Unigel celebrates
export
In 2010, Unigel, a Latin American manufacturer of
specialty chemicals, fertilizers, plastics and packaging
materials, was presented with Abiquim’s “Successful
Exporter” award. “Last year Unigel was extremely
successful at exporting our main products, which are
acrylnitril, used especially in acrylic fibers for the
textile industry, methyl methacrylate (MMA), used in
the packaging industry, and ethyl methacrylate (EMA),
monomers that are used in the coatings and consumer
electronics industries,” says Unigel’s business director
Marcelo Thieme.
The company started implementing its efforts in incre-
ase exports in 2002. “Originally, our idea was to double
our MMA capacity, so that we could increase our share
in export markets. And then we succeeded. From 2002
to 2005, we did operate at the top of our exporting
capacity, which was 10,000 tons per year. We kept
investing, increasing our capacity to 45,000 tons per
year, and then to 90,000 tons per year. That latest
addition of 45,000 tons per year is now all exported, as
we’ve taken a great leap and are new selling around
the world,” Thieme remarks.
Such growth has been attained thanks to the metha-
crylates line, more specifically MMA and EMA. “For
more than ten years Unigel has had growth as our
main strategic focus, which means becoming a major
global producer of MMA and EMA, supplying all conti-
nents. In Brazil, we have invested over US$ 750 million
in the last eight years, leading Unigel reach the sixth
position in the world ranking of MMA producers,
and first among EMA producers. Currently, our Bahia
plant produces 90,000 tons of MMA and EMA per year,
divided into 80,000 tons of MMA and 10,000 tons of
EMA per year, and the Mexico plant has capacity for
25,000 tons of MMA per year,” Thieme points out.

of organizing the event,” he says.
