demanded and still demands lots of efforts. In addition,
other regulations have been imposed by regulating
agencies, such as environmental agencies (CETESB, in
São Paulo) and fire departments. It is not by accident
that the solvent business has decreased considerably.
On the other hand, that fact provides better safety for
consumers, as they are assured that solvent distributors
are in full compliance with the ANP’s Resolution 24.
Another noteworthy point in this business refers to the
increase in international oil prices, which spreads to oil
derivatives. As a result, hydrocarbon solvent (aliphatic
and aromatic) prices fluctuate according to oil prices.
“Notwithstanding the fall in the exchange rate, prices
in reals are higher. However, it is worth pointing out
that the prices for oxygenated solvents, which are also
oil derivatives, have increased above the average for
hydrocarbons. In the first quarter of 2011, vegetable
solvents produced from pitch (terebinthine) and sugar-
-cane (ethanol and ethyl) also had higher price increa-
ses.” says William Chiossi, manager at quantiQ’s paints,
adhesives and construction chemicals business unit.
Carbon Black - A key pigment
Used in virtually all pigmented paints and coatings,
such as black and other colored paints and even those
with lighter shades, carbon blacks provide not only
pigmentation, but also such other properties as gloss,
UV-resistance and conductivity.
There has been a rather positive demand in the do-
mestic market for the carbon black industry, and there
are prospects for growth for the years to come, as the
business keeps pace with the paint industry. In the
earlier months of 2011, however, the consumption was
positive, but below the expectation, since the industry
anticipated a big increase in sales on the back of the
international events that will be hosted by the country,
such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, as
well as investments in pre-salt oil drilling, infrastructu-
re, etc.
Like most other raw materials used in paints, carbon
blacks are very sensitive to oil price fluctuations, and
their prices vary as do those of all oil derivatives. Over
the past few months, carbon black prices have increa-
sed significantly, but the market has already identified
a downward trend in oil prices, which should bring
about some relief.
For 2011, sales are believed to increase substantially
due to the good period in the paint industry, which has
been boosted by the increased purchased power of class
C and class D consumers and the growth in investments
in infrastructure, housing and the automotive industry.
All of these factors have positive effects on the paint
industry and, as a result, the carbon black business.
Maritime and Offshore Coatings - Pick-up in
business in the ship-building industry
There has been a global expansion in ocean carria-
ge, and the industry has been growing fast since the
very beginning of this year. Investments in pre-salt oil
drilling, the PROMEF (Transpetro’s Fleet Upgrade and
Expansion Program) and inland waterway navigation
have been creating a huge demand in Brazil’s ship-buil-
ding industry. At glance at the number of new shipyar-
ds alone demonstrates that. Such fast growth clearly
sets a trend for increase in consumption of maritime
coatings.
According to data provided by the National Union of
the Ship-Building and Offshore Repair Industry, known
for short as Sinval, there are 13 new shipyards in the
pipeline in several Brazilian regions. This means that
the number of job opportunities will only grow. This
is an industry which formally employs over 56,000
workers right now.
The market in boats is also growing Brazil for both
luxury or simpler models, and so is the number of
jobs with boat builders. Altogether, 4,400 recreational
boats were built last year, against 3,500 for 2009. That
production is 71-percent concentrated in the Southeast
region, and despite seemingly small, it creates eight jobs
per boat produced, on average. And new technologies
are incorporated into recreation navigation each year.
The 14th edition of the Rio Boat Show, which took place
this year from April 27 until May 3 in Rio de Janeiro,
Rio de Janeiro, brought together 52,000 visitors and
120 exhibitors, and reported around US$ 150 million
worth of business, well above the initially expected R$
170 million turnover.
Deputy State Secretary of Energy, Logistics and Indus-
trial Development Renata Cavalcanti said that since
the enactment of the 2008 state decree which lowered
the Tax on Goods and Services (ICMS, in Portuguese)
payable on recreational boats built within the State to
7 percent, the boat-building industry has been keeping
a growth rate of 15 percent per year, even in the period
