PAINT & PINTURA
Doctor Ana Augusta Passos Rezende
and Professor Doctor Rita de Cassia
Alvarenga, got the third position. The
team were recognized by their paper
“Adding value to waste: an alternative
distillation method for waste from the
furniture coating application process”
The fact that 14 very relevant papers
were registered, all of which still unpu-
blished, demonstrates that making the
award presentation an annual event
was the right decision. Accordingly, the
14
th
edition will take place in 2012. “The
award is a benchmark due to its seriou-
sness and encouragement to innovation.
To us it’s an honor to be co-sponsors,”
said Paulo Ricardo Avelar, Manager,
Paint, Adhesive and Rubber Chemicals,
at Petrobras Distribuidora.
“By their quality and number, the papers
received show that there’s a strong
movement in pursuit of innovation in
coatings, which is essential for the tech-
nological development and sustainabili-
ty of the industry,” says Abrafati’s Chief
Executive Officer Dilson Ferreira.
Fluorcolor Introduced to the Market
Formerly known as Datiquim, Fluor-
colors Pigmentos Indústria e Comércio
Ltda. is introducing its new company
name to the marketplace. The main
reason for the change was the in-
crease in its exports. “We decided to
create a name that was easier for our
international customers to remember,
while alluding to our products and still
making sense to our domestic custo-
mers,” says Fluorcolors co-owner Rubens
Parodi.
The company picked its new name in
order to create a direct association with
its products. “Since we already used the
name Fluorcolor on one of our product
series, it was a natural choice. The logo,
on the other hand, was created by plas-
tic artist Fernanda Rodante. We wanted
something unique that would somewhat
represent these more colorful shades of
fluorescent pigments,” unveils Fluorco-
lors co-owner Bruno Grandeza.
However, Fluorcolor’s customers will see
no change other than the new name.
“Our customers can keep relying on the
convenience of having a domestically-
-made product with world-class quali-
ty,” Parodi stresses.
Industry in the Spotlight -
Commitment to Quality
Polystell Brazil started operating in
early 2001 in São Bernardo do Campo,
Greater São Paulo. Back then, it had
only a minimal number of employees,
who were coordinated by its founders,
the chemical engineers Neiva Carvalho
and Wildon Lopes. “Polystell was created
to address new competitive require-
ments in the additives market, parti-
cularly in cooperation with unsatura-
ted polyester. We’ve always sought to
innovate with our products and retain
skilled employees, which has enabled
us to meet the needs and requirements
from manufacturers of other manufac-
turing segments, such manufacturers of
decorative paints, automotive coatings
and protective coatings, thermoplastics
and thermosetting plastics, composites,
gel coats, polyurethantes, textiles and
other products,” says Wildon Lopes,
Chief Executive Officer at Polystell.
Lopes met Neiva at the school of che-
mical engineering of the Oswaldo Cruz
university, in São Paulo. Neiva, an engi-
neer extensively experienced in indus-
trial lubricants, gel coats and chemical
analysis, combined her efforts with her
partner, who had worked for companies
like Cromex, Tingiplast, Tecglass and
others. “The partnership gave rise to
Axxis Química, a manufacturer of gel
coats which ranked first in the business
in the Brazilian market at that time.
A while later, in face of the turbulent
economic scenario that affected the
industry, we combined our experiences
to strengthen our business and enable
it to keep pace with the advances in the
chemical industry, until 2000, when the
opportunity arose to create a company
to produce additives,” Lopes tells.
And that was the birth of Polystell. “We
found the origin of the name Polystell in
the Arab world. It is a combination of
the “poly”, for polymers, and “stell”, whi-
ch means star in Arabic. And it couldn’t
sound any better. But while its name
originates in foreign words, Polystell
is an all-Brazilian industrial company
which is currently devoted to serving
customers in various segments of the
manufacturing sector,” says Lopes.
In early 2001 came Polystell, breaking
into the composites business to supply
customers from its site in the district of
Vila Santa Luzia, São Bernardo do Cam-
po. A while later, the company moved
to the district to Serraria, in Diadema,
São Paulo. In 2011, to celebrate its 10
th
anniversary, the company moved to its
own facilities in the district of Alvaren-
ga, São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo.
There, two additive plants are up and
running.
Personality - Professionalism and
Dedication
Fernando Simões, who graduated in
business at Instituto de Ensino Superior
Senador Flaquer, in Santo André, in 1975
and the “Professor De Plácido e Silva”
School of Economic, Accounting and Ma-
nagement Sciences in 1977, celebrated
his 44
th
year at ExxonMobil in 2011. “My
last job at ExxonMobil was as sales re-
presentative, where I added several cour-
ses in solvent technology and applica-
tions to my previous training. Exxon has
always provided employees with courses
related to their job and aimed at their
development,” says Fernando Simões.
Simões got his first job very young, in
1966, before he even finished his un-
