Metallic Packaging - Practical, Safe and Environment-
Friendly
Metallic packaging grows stronger in the paint market as
manufacturers consistently invest to make cans safer, more
practical and more appealing to consumers, as well as an envi-
ronmentally friendly product.
With the upturn in the economy, the metallic packaging
industry performed well in the initial months of 2011, but
the international crisis and the increased supply of imports
in the domestic market had an impact on the industry, which
saw paint consumption decline and obviously led to a bit of a
downturn in metallic packaging sales over the following mon-
ths. For this reason, the industry was unable to achieve the
expected two-figure growth rate, which was later reviewed to
one percentage point in excess of the Brazil’s GDP growth, as
announced by Abrafati —quite a great result nonetheless.
Cerviflan experienced a 6-percent increase in value in 2011
compared to the previous year. “When it comes to metallic
packaging materials, while the food market has seen business
decline by 3 percent in volume each year, the chemical industry
has gained 10 percent per year. By the end of the 2011, Cervi-
flan was processing 2,500 tons of steel per month, with annual
turnover of around R$ 200 million. In aerosol containers, we
became the market leader in 2011. Our capacity reached 12
million tubes per month, or twice the average for the first half
and ten times that of our first year in business. By the end of
2012, we’ll be producing 17 million containers a month,” says
Cerviflan’s CEO Vicente Lozargo Filho.
For 2012, the market expects a period of recovery, despite the
uncertainties arising out of the international economic crisis.
From the current situation, the first few months will still be
tough, but the second half will bring along positive results
thanks to the good period that the country is living. “Prada
supplies metallic packaging to customers in two segments:
chemicals and foods. For the chemical segment, the company
projects growth of around 8 percent, with more emphasis on
the aerosol market, where Prada plans to make heavy invest-
ments in technology and expansion. For paints and coatings,
sales will keep up with the market trend, with expected growth
of 4 percent for 2012.
In a nutshell, Prada’s growth expectations are based on capa-
city expansion and strategic investments in the bucket, aerosol
and gallon lines, as well as innovative launches that will help
the company increase both sales and market share,” Prada’s
Sales Manager Reinaldo dos Santos unveils.
The year 2012 represents the consolidation of the economic
growth and development experienced in 2011. As business
increases more and more in the building and construction in-
dustry and Brazil’s aerosol market keeps on growing above the
average, so will the paint industry.
Production Equipment - Mills, Dispensers and Mixers –
Automation On The Rise
There is a growing demand for increasingly automated
production equipment that provides major benefits to the
industry, such as optimized use of resources and improved
productivity.
The paint industry is rather demanding when it comes to
production equipment —mills, dispensers and mixers. Manu-
facturers of such equipment strive to develop machines that
deliver outstanding brightness, durability and strength, while
improving productivity and optimizing the use of resources. In
addition, they need to have strict control over specifications
and meet delivery deadlines.
Another important requirement concerning equipment for the
paint industry is the automation of in-paint color processes,
which means that the market demands high production speeds
without prejudice to accuracy in dispensing and full integra-
tion with information and plant management systems, such
as management and control software for inventories, raw
materials, production, shipment, etc.
In such a fiercely competitive market, quality production equi-
pment needs to use more modern, optimized processes and to
involve a low total and energy cost per kilogram produced.
Events - Eight Researchers Presented with Abrafati-
Petrobras Awards
On December 14, the Brazilian Association of Paint Manufac-
turers, known for short as Abrafati, held the 13
th
Abrafati-
-Petrobras Coatings Science Awards at Clube Monte Líbano,
in São Paulo. Three innovative, high-end technical papers on
sustainability-related themes were awarded which were con-
ducted by eight researchers from universities and businesses.
Guilherme Bandeira Martins and Vinicius Moreira Mello,
applying for a doctor’s and master’s degree at the University
of Brasilia, respectively, came in first with their paper entitled
“Producing media to formulate printing inks and bio-oils for
use as heat source from residual and refined oils.”
In second came Carla Maria Nascimento da Fonseca and Sil-
mara das Neves, of the company IQX – Inove Qualyx Tecnologia
e Desenvolvimento em Resinas, for their paper “Development
of conductive eco-resins: adding value to raw glycerin using
products which minimize electromagnetic pollution.”
Ismael Henrique da Silveira and Renata Rocha Torres, both
environmental engineering students at the Federal University
of Viçosa, together with their advising professors, Professor
