Pigments - Merck Introduces Color Trends for the
Automotive Industry
On December 6, Merck held an event to present
its study entitled “Color Inspirations for Automo-
tive Coatings 2012/2013” at the headquarters of
its chemical division Merck Millipore, located in
Barueri, São Paulo, which introduced color and
effect trends for 2013 in the automotive segment,
while putting car shapes on display to illustrate the
influences that are going to inspire consumers.
The coatings on cars made in Brazil, which are
typically silver, black, white or red, may gain new
shades as early as next year. This is the conclu-
sion of “Color Inspirations for Automotive Coatings
2012/2013”, a study conducted by the Germany-
based chemical and pharmaceutical company
Merck, in partnership with other companies en-
gaged in the industry, that shows color trends for
the automotive industry. The study resulted in the
creation of five color collections to reflect differ-
ent consumer profiles: “Best Friends Forever”, “True
Romance”, “Free Spirit”, “Grand Passion”, and “Crazy
Love”. The presentation was conducted by Merck’s
own experts Janina Wachtel, account manager, and
Nadine Bachmann, global sales manager, both of
whom are based in Germany.
The study showed new developments in effect
pigments, which were displayed using car shapes
painted in the colors of each collection. Altogeth-
er, 60 new colors and effects were introduced as
trends. They include green, high-gloss yellow and
intense red shades, earth, copper and pink tones,
gold and different shades of blue. Pearlescent, high
gloss, intense and matte effects stood out as well.
The guests present —colorists from auto makers
and paint industry professionals— were invited to
vote for their most and least appreciated colors.
For each collection, 12 color and effect options were
presented. The suggested options were listed in a
brochure specifying formulations of the materials
used and their respective concentration values, as
well as the applied coating system, consisting of
either a two-coat or three-coat finish. “The trend
for the next few years is towards bringing more
life and color into car components. According to
the study, this change relates to the current social
context, new consumer requirements, uncertain-
ties and the various reasons for which consumers
feel the need to have an emotional connection with
their cars. The colors shown in the study are much
more vibrant, and Merck is a firm believer in this
trend, which has already become noticeable on the
streets, as some models, although still in a small
number, have been set apart for their bold colors,”
says Edson Cordeiro, director at Merck’s Perfor-
mance Materials division.
