Associquim-Sincoquim Holds Annual Holiday Dinner
Associquim-Sincoquim (short in Portuguese for Brazi-
lian Association of Chemical and Petrochemical Dis-
tributors and Union of São Paulo State Chemical and
Petrochemical Wholesalers) held its annual holiday
dinner on December 6 at Buffet França, in São Paulo,
where it brought together its member chemical and
petrochemical distributors, as well as representatives
of the entire supply chain and the industry’s most
important entities.
On the occasion, the association presented awards to
major companies in the distribution business. Oxiquim
Química, a member since 1977, was honored as the
most senior member by affiliation date, while Akzo-
Nobel accepted the award as the most senior member
by foundation date. In the People of Value category,
intended to honor individuals who have supported and
contributed to the distribution industry, the winner
was Paulo de Tarso Martins Gomes, president of the
Brazilian Transportation and Logistics Association for
Hazardous Products (ABTLP, the initials in Portuguese).
In addition, the companies Additiva and SCS Comer-
cial e Produtos Químicos were announced as newly-
-certified by the Responsible Distribution Program
(Prodir, the abbreviation in Portuguese).
In his closing speech, Associquim’s president Rubens
Medrano sent a message of optimism for the next few
years. “Problems do exist, but we’re not going to give
up. We must unite and look for the best solutions. The
major events that will be hosted here in the future,
such as the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic
Games, are going to bring in a series of investments,
which investments are already in the process of being
authorized, thereby creating new opportunities and
jobs and contributing to development and growth in
several industries.”
Abrafati Holds Function in São Paulo
The Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers, known
for short as Abrafati, held its traditional year-end dinner
party on December 12 at Clube Atlético Monte Líbano, in
São Paulo. There, the entity praised leading professionals for
their remarkable roles in the development of the paint in-
dustry and Abrafati itself. Named “Abrafati Personalities” for
everything that they stand for, four well-known individuals
were honored in last year’s function: Elio Cepollina, Ernst
Blumenthal, Heinz Mayer and Otto Rohr.
“The four of these personalities have devoted their entire
lives to improving the paint industry and provided a subs-
tantial contribution to our reaching the level of develop-
ment at which we find ourselves today,” said Abrafati’s chief
executive officer Dilson Ferreira. “We need to recognize great
professionals who make the paint industry a strong and
respected one, and this is why we will carry on with this
initiative, honoring more individuals each year,” he added.
Abrafati-Petrobras Awards
The function also included a ceremony for the presentation
of the 14
th
Abrafati-Petrobras Coatings Science Awards. The
authors of three high-end technical studies were recognized
based on an evaluation conducted by a judging committee
consisting of industry experts.
Researcher Fernando Codelo Nascimento, of Instituto de
Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares, together with his adviser
Prof. Dr. Celina Lopes Duarte, came in first. The theme for
his innovative paper was waste treatment in ionizing-radia-
tion industrial, automotive finish and automotive refinish
coatings plants.
In second place came a group of researchers from AkzoNo-
bel, namely, Anderson Nunes Mendes, Gerson dos Santos,
Paulo Cesar Lorenceto, Priscilla Yukari Itokawa and Rubens
Lira Dias, who were advised by Mateo Lazzarin. The team’s
paper proposes a new dry coating method using the Kaizen
philosophy for improved productivity, lower costs, reduced
waste generation and a smaller carbon footprint.
Chemical engineer Tiago Honorato da Silva and his adviser
Prof. Dr. Paulo Sergio Calefi, of University of Franca, ranked
third. The basis for their paper was green chemistry and
sustainability for developing nano-pigments, showing the
metallophthalocyanine synthesis and immobilization on
kaolin in one step.
