use of inorganic pigment in those products. Many organic
pigment manufacturers are already certified under inter-
national standards, such as the REACH standard and the
RoHS directive,” says Colormix’s technical sales manager
Cristine Lopes Carmargo.
It is clear that while being more mature today, this market
keeps seeking alternatives that can provide a better cost-
benefit ratio. “The profile and geographical location of
organic pigment manufactures have changed completely
over the past few years, and there’s no doubt that much
of the production has moved to the East. Today, as never
before, there are countless pigment manufacturers, and
the challenge lies in selecting those which actually ensure
consistent quality and continuity. As a result, is up to those
manufactures to seek alternatives that meet those needs.
The most important thing in this process in ensuring con-
sistent colorimetric results,” says ColorNet’s technical sales
manager Silvia Ferreira de Gouveia.
Brazil has a very developed paint industry that includes
major global players. “Since the country has quite a signifi-
cant output, it’s only natural for several pigment manu-
facturers to turn their eyes to our market with a view to
getting a piece of the action. Quite a few years back into
this process, we observed the rise of low-cost, poor quality
products. Today, however, the market is more selective, and
customers know they can find quality products at com-
petitive costs,” says Sérgio Rubio, technical manager at
quantiQ.
Mineral Fillers and Slurries - High Perfor-
mance and Functionality
Mineral fillers are currently viewed as materials which
impart important functionalities to end products thanks
to constant investments in research and development that
result in innovations and new technologies.
More than just minerals, these fillers are now considered
additives due to the important functionalities they impart
to paint formulations. This is because they have evolved
a lot over the past several years as companies have made
massive investments to develop high-performance products
and reduce particle sizes, which now incorporate much
more technology into end the end products.
Mineral fillers are indispensable in paints and coatings for
the most varied of applications. “Brazil has a substantial
development platform for several reasons, including the
fact that it has deposits of various ores, which is extremely
important because it takes a good mineral to make a good
product, and its excellence in extraction and front-end
beneficiation. In addition, there is a relevant presence of
global manufacturers of these products in Brazil,” says
Leandro Bizarro da Rocha, of Imerys’ Innovation, Research
& Development and Application department.
By the way, the coming of global players has also given a
boost to the development of this segment. “There is also
a lot of competition with imported performance products
that are very competitively priced. As the foreign exchange
rate has remained stable at a relatively low level, imports
