giving examples of film formation problems.
It was followed by PPG, with the lecture entitled “What Is Sus-
tainability in the Paint Industry?,” delivered by PPG’s environ-
ment, health and safety manager Ivan Rigolletto. It covered
the evolution of sustainability concepts achieved until Rio+20,
the environment and safety management systems available for
the paint industry, the application of sustainability concepts in
the industry, trends for the future, and insights into an actual
case (PPG).
The last lecture, by G. Tessaro, director at Tessaro’s Assessoria
Empresarial, was entitled “Paint Formulation Techniques Using
Product Engineering,” and introduced concepts, methods and
applications for the formulation of paints using product en-
gineering and related processes as a tool for product develop-
ment professionals.
Industry in the Spotlight - In the Forefront of
Knowledge
Established two years ago as a result of a joint venture betwe-
en Ashland and Sud Chemie (currently part of Clariant), ASK
Chemicals specializes in resins and comprehensive range of
foundry products.
Just because the company is focused on the foundry market
doesn’t mean that it can’t compete, for example, in the market
for decorative and industrial coatings, as it carries on with
the traditional line of resins Arobras, which it inherited from
Ashland.
Accordingly, ASK Chemicals is banking on the expansion of its
portfolio through new additions to its Arobras alkyd resins and
Askofen phenolic resins. The highlight of its display at Abrafati
2013 is Necowel, a line of waterborne alkyd reins produced
with European proprietary technology.
“In the foundry market, our point of difference is the quality of
our products, combined with technical support and environ-
mental preservation. The contents of environment-damaging
products in our portfolio have dropped 60 percent, and will be
eliminated in our upcoming products. Our inorganic foundry
resins are completely harmless to the environment. Our pheno-
lic resins, which are part of the organic range, those contents
tend to decrease more and more,” says Luiz Augusto Totti,
general manager, South America, adding that ASK Chemicals
serves customers in all foundry segments.
Specifically in Brazil, Canada and Europe, the multinational
provides specialty resins, particularly alkyd ones. “Our work is
focused on search innovation, and new markets will come as a
result,” Totti says.
Although they are not the company’s core business, its resins
for the paint and coatings industry account for a big chunk
of its total sales in Brazil. “Resins are important, particularly
given the seasonality in the markets where they are used. Our
target is to solve the volume equation. This is the point,” stres-
ses the general manager for South America.
ASK Chemicals’ sales manager Antonio Carrascosa says that
the legacy range of resins has had a synergistic effect on the
company’s supply of industrial coating products. “In addition
to alkyd resins, our portfolio includes epoxy esters, concentra-
ted phenol solutions, metal and gravure printing resins, and
phenolic resins for use in primers, adhesives and abrasives.
Our water-based alkyd resins are well-suited for decorative co-
ating applications. The product exchange that taken place over
the past two years culminated in a vast, customized portfolio,”
he concludes.
Almanac - Internationalization: A Mission for
Paint & Pintura
Back in the mid 1990’s, more precisely in 1996, Paint & Pintura
Magazine came out in the national and international ma-
rkets, circulating in three languages: Portuguese, English and
Spanish. It was a milestone at that time, as it pioneered the
publication in Brazil - and other Latin American countries at
the same time - of important information on the paint and co-
atings industry amidst an intensive mergers and acquisitions
movement sparked off by multinational players which either
wanted to focus on their core business or were willing to invest
in emerging economies.
True to its pioneering spirit, Paint & Pintura was the first
magazine in the industry to set up the Brazilian flag at trade
shows in foreign countries as early as 1997, when it covered
and had a booth at two highly relevant international events:
Pintura 97 (4a Exposición Internacional de La Indústria de La
Pintura, which took place from September 10 to 14 in Buenos
Aires, Argentina; and ICE (International Coatings Expo) 97,
which was held from November 3 to 5 in Atlanta, Georgia
(USA). Between those two events, it also participated in the 5th
International Paint Congress held by Abrafati in São Paulo, São
Paulo, by providing full coverage of the show, which had 120
exhibitors and has been considered the largest trade show for
the paint and coatings industry in Latin America ever since.
That year’s November-December issue reaches its readers full
of new developments, as it covered the three of the aforemen-
tioned events in a way that no other industry publication had
ever done. It was so successful that its participation in inter-
national events has been a constant since that issue.
Many professionals who worked for famous companies at that
time are still in the industry and have been able to witness
Paint & Pintura’s supremacy right from the outset, as it made
its way into foreign countries, established itself as the leading
magazine in the paint and coatings industry, and set out to
pursue its mission of massively spreading information, while
taking the name of Brazil overseas.
Since then, the magazine has kept pace with the domestic
paint and coatings industry, which has grown significantly,
to the point of doubling the per capita consumption of paints,
and now has state-of-the-art technologies at its disposal.
