The podium discussion was promptly followed by a lecture
entitled “Fundamentals of Carbon Black and Fumed Silica Focu-
sing on Coating Applications,” delivered by Léa Sgai, marketing
and technical service manager, Cabot, Latin America. The
main idea of her presentation was to explain the fundamentals
of carbon black and fumed silica by addressing manufacturing
aspects, the influence of particle size and surface area, and the
surface chemistry and performance of these specialty chemi-
cals. The right choice of pigment grades focusing on coating
applications was also explained with a view to enabling manu-
facturers to find the product that best meets each requirement.
Intertank’s presentation was in the morning as well, with the
lecture “Stainless Steel IBCs – Safety, Economy and Regula-
tions,” delivered by the company’s own chemical engineer
Paulo Caetano. Intertank talked about how the safety and
mechanical strength of stainless steel IBCs streamline logistic
processes and dissipate static energy, thereby minimizing risks
of fire, meet the requirements of the applicable ordinances of
Inmetro and Resolution no. 420 issued by the ANTT (Federal
Road Transportation Agency), save costs compared to drums
and other large containers, and ensure environmental protec-
tion with safety valves, recyclability and total waste control.
Thereupon, attendees watched Polystell’s lecture entitled “Addi-
tive Solutions for Premium Formulations,” by sales manager
Afonso Monteiro and quality coordinator Raul Cazzoto. Polys-
tell Aditivos showcased its leading product lines that directly
improve quality and the cost-benefit ratio for better formula-
tions. Highlights included polymer coalescing agents, titanium
chelates, water- and solvent-based dispersants, neutralizers
and poly-nano-silver.
The afternoon began with Bandeirante Brazmo’s lecture
“Solvents & Solubility: Impact of Rheology during the Coa-
ting Film Formation Process,” delivered by Denilson Vicentim,
assistant technician, Rhodia-Solvay Group (Coatis – Solvents),
which correlated solvent power, evaporation rate and the
solubility parameter theory. That correlation was used to
explain Hansen’s concepts and the phenomena involved in the
interaction between solvent and resin during a coating film
formation process.
M. Cassab’s lecture “NX 795: Properties and Applications” was
presented by Nataly Silva, market development manager at
Perstorp. The main goal of her presentation was to educate
the audience in the fundamentals of film formation and the
properties of the NX 795 and NX 800 coalescing agents, while
