PAINT & PINTURA
materials from renewable sources in
the making of other products, thereby
helping us achieve our sustainability
goals in a more efficient way.
A combination of research and develo-
pment efforts aimed at new products
with further investigation into known
technologies aiming for better results
in both the processes involved and
the end product —that is innovation.
Research means investment and, as
such, it requires capital and takes a
long time to pay off. Innovation, on
the other hand, can be more about
using the result of previous research
that has already paid off, but doing
it in a different way to yield benefits
in the short term. And this is how
the combination works: you resear-
ch to invent new products, and you
innovate to get better results from
existing products, thus making them
more important to the industry. While
research requires capital, innovation
capitalizes on the return already
achieved on previous investments.
Any attendee who looks carefully at
the program for our congress will see
that innovation is there, as a com-
mon denominator in all lectures, and
the result, the sum of the innovation
contents of all these lectures, for those
who really follow everything that is
going on at the congress, will be wi-
thout a doubt a major contribution to
the advance of the paint industry in
various respects. This sums up what
is expected from our event.
The lectures being delivered at the
congress and the demonstrations oc-
curring at the booths of all exhibitors
combine into a globally unique display
of the paint and coating industry. As
all leading paint manufacturers are
here, and so are all major suppliers
to the paint and coating industry
worldwide, the trade show is bringing
the state of the art in the world to
our country, to Latin America, to our
foreign visitors and, especially, to our
supply chain in Brazil. We are better
prepared to carry on with our mission
of continuously furthering the deve-
lopment of our industry, as Abrafati
proposes to do with our organization,
members and partners.
Paint & Pintura Magazine: Has
the number of international
exhibitors increased?
Dilson Ferreira:
Yes, undoubtedly
so. As I said before, our trade show
is happening at a time of many
global and local changes, and
global changes are making Brazil an
appealing market to global players
in the paint industry.
Brazil has good prospects for growth
in both its economy, in general, and
the industries we serve, in particular,
so the economy will grow and, as it
does, so will the paint industry in
Brazil, particularly as the industries
where our products are used outpa-
ce the country’s average economic
growth, and those include building
and construction, in general, and
housing, in particular, because new
housing projects are needed, and the
government is willing to satisfy that
need using all means available, while
additional funds from private sources
will allow the housing market to grow
more rapidly and, in so doing, further
contribute to the nation’s economic
development.
As in home construction, paints and
coatings are needed in infrastruc-
ture construction projects that are
already under way. So now we are
talking about two construction seg-
ments where there are prospects for
strong growth in the use of paints
and coatings, namely, housing and
infrastructure.
Altogether, these things are making
Brazil attractive, which has reflected
in the substantial increase we have
seen in the number of foreign exhi-
bitors, and they are not coming from
any one specific country, but from
Asia, Europe, the United States and
virtually all other parts of the world.
This is a major point of difference of
this year’s edition, as we’re having
this increased supply from abroad to
complement the competitive, high-
-quality products and services that
are already provided by the domestic
manufacturing sector.
Paint & Pintura Magazine:
How many lectures does the
congress include?
Dilson Ferreira:
We make sure the
number of lectures in our congress
is enough to allow information to
be shared on the various themes
of interest. Even though the large
number of registered lectures
for this year enabled us to select
more of them and raise the bar on
quality, it also forced us to leave
