future technological and business
requirements.
It’s taking place at a moment when
very important changes are happe-
ning around the world, especially
some which affect the paint industry.
And at this time of change in our
country, society, politics and, as a
result, the prospects for our economy,
we are estimating what the impact
will be on our industry of these eco-
nomic changes.
I take Abrafati 2013 as a whole. The
timing for the exhibition and congress
is great, and the two of them combi-
ned will provide everyone across the
supply chain with a very important
outlook for this industry.
Paint & Pintura Magazine:
How do you view these global
changes that affect the
industry?
Dilson Ferreira:
Firstly, there
are demands that we generally
refer to as sustainability-related,
which involve raising awareness
not only among manufacturers
and suppliers, but also consumers
and users, or otherwise all of those
who are affected and need to be
increasingly engaged in the process
of building a better future, taking
into consideration environmental
concerns, the health of all of
those involved, safety in the
process, and sustainability, from
the environmental, social and
economic standpoints.
As changes take hold on all of these
fronts, the most significant are those
on the economic one, which involve
relocation of growth areas, the cri-
ses that certain countries and world
regions have experienced, and the re-
sulting changes in growth prospects.
Socially speaking, if you look at
our country now, with the demons-
trations that are taking place and
society demanding better living
standards, more quality, and more
value for their tax money, there’s no
doubt that political and economic
changes can be sparked off.
On the environmental front, it is
important to raise awareness, in-
cluding that we need to use raw
materials from renewable sources,
so that these raw materials will be
still available for us over many years
to come, and to have our production
processes consume less energy and
reduce carbon emissions for the
preservation of the atmosphere,
meaning that the contributions we
need to make to the environment
are decisive.
Right now, not only do our laws need
to address the waste we produce,
our people and the producers in our
industry need to be careful about it
as well, be the waste liquid, solid or
evaporating VOCs. In the industry,
it’s very important that this waste be
recycled into the production process
in which each kind originates.
Paint & Pintura Magazine: Is
“sustainability” still the main
theme for Abrafati?
Dilson Ferreira:
Today,
sustainability has to be the theme
for our society, and it has to take
precedence over all other themes of
concern in all production processes
and all industry segments. While
some segments are more advanced
than others in sustainability, it is
none the less a concern in all of our
processes and decisions. It has been
a concern in all of the changes that
have been introduced at Abrafati
and is part of our communication
with the entire market.
Paint & Pintura Magazine:
What’s new at Abrafati 2013?
Dilson Ferreira:
Abrafati 2013
comprises many different activities,
especially the congress and the
exhibition, so there’s always a lot
going on, and much of it at the
same time. For the congress, the
lectures are significantly raising the
bar on technological innovation.
And innovation is not just about
introducing new products or
processes. It also has to do the
ability of an industry to look at
existing technologies and find ways
of using them better, extending
them to other applications and
other production processes, and so
you can also innovate by using what
you’ve already got, only achieving
better results, especially in terms of
sustainability.
As does the entire chemical indus-
try, so, too, does the paint industry
continuously invest in research and
development to come up with pro-
ducts that are new not only in their
chemistry, but also in how they are
used to reduce energy consumption
and enable the incorporation of raw
